Thanks for that. I didn't realise about the luggage racks. I know they are on the Nottingham to St. Pancras trains, but unless you get on early, they are always full.

From St. Pancras. This train was so slow. It stopped at every station. I think calling it an "Express" was wishful thinking. 🤣🤣
Someone gave you the wrong name, there's a lot of people who call every train going to Gatwick the "Gatwick Express" even though it's not. The St Pancras train is just the Thameslink regular service. Two years ago it would have been very slow as they were on diversion around London Bridge due to the station works - they should be faster once the work is complete.

FWIW, the actual named "Gatwick Express" service is a non-stop service from London Victoria to Gatwick which has dedicated platforms at Victoria. And isn't really worth the extra money purely from a time POV. Depending on the time of day, the regular Southern services only have 2 extra stops and are about 3 minutes slower than the "express". Although I do prefer that one from a commuting further than Gatwick as a lot of the crowds disembark at those two stops (Clapham Junction and East Croydon) which makes the GEX quieter.
