Valet parking

Hi
I have never done valet parking but a hotel we are staying in only offers valet so where do you stand with your car insurance? As you are letter someone else drive your car what if something happens to it are you still insured? I know I’m prob overthinking as it’s the norm to valet park (or seems to be)

A certain Dibber on here asked the same question of Alamo.

Their response was as long as the Valet is performing the role as part of their employment then the Insurance is valid. Basically I suspect the hire company would pursue the Valet company to reclaim their costs.

However if the Valet for example is at a charity event and Valet is complimentary then no it's not covered.
Bear in mind this response was from Alamo not any other company.

Thanks Tom i have a car with Avis so will contact them. It would be Hotel valet so that would come under the employment part. TBH I’m not keen and I’ve relooked and they do have self park option so will go with that but will still look into valet incase there’s no room in self park

I suppose the real question is - is the valet service provided by the hotel or is it a "contracted service"i.e. run by an outside company? The answer to this might be easy enough to find out by asking the hotel concerned directly and checking with car-hire provider. I've just asked Dollar - who are supplying my car for our next trip and I will report back what they say.

Fabulous thank you. I will email my hotel too. In Santa Monica there are loads of just valet so surely you must be covered or no one would hand the keys across

OK here's the response from Dollar's - part of the Hertz group, legal team as supplied to me from uscarhire.

"In North America, valet parking (operation of the vehicle by a parking valet) is an authorized use of the vehicle and not a violation of the Rental Agreement. If the renter has LDW, the renter would not be responsible for damage to the vehicle (as the valet is authorized under the Rental Agreement and therefore not a violation of the Rental Agreement).

If the renter does not have LDW, the renter remains responsible for all damage to the rental vehicle. If the damage was caused by a parking valet, although the renter remains responsible the valet’s employer would first be pursued by Hertz for collection of the damages to the rental vehicle by the valet for you"

A response from Alamo, requested by uscarhire, is expected shortly and I will post this as soon as I receive it. But guess it will be similar - we shall see . The key is to make sure to have LDW as part of the car hire contract.
