I love your update - I work in a school so can't take my kids during term time but I really think it will be good for your nephew to go away with you so fingers crossed here too.

Ok our school years are different but I'm guessing Year 7 is the same as our p7 or p6 but Primary school basically (?), we found our school really understanding as we done something similar with DS, the school were well aware of what was going on as he had to be "pulled" from school on a day when things with his Mum were at their darkest. Fortunately after a very long struggle she pulled through, of course our first holiday after that was Disney but we could only go during term time but his Head teacher granted him time off & even when we asked for school work to take with us, they told us to forget about it.

May is a rare time to be doing year 7 exams - simply put schools are very busy getting ready for A levels and GCSE's, the last sprint to the finish is taking up a lot of time then. Year 7 exams (in schools where they even have these) tend to be later in June when rooms are free and there is time to mark them properly. Fines do not have to be issued, so given the circumstances the school may well make a token gesture asking for homework or something to be done when he gets back but this sort of break is usually granted for the overall well-being of the student.

It may well be unauthorised by school but that doesn't mean you can't take him. It is just not authorised. They can't hold him prisoner

They can only grant leave for exceptional circumstances so it will probably go down as unauthorised and then the school can choose whether to notify the local council and it is they that issue the fine.

When we did this you could have 4 1/2 days fine free, the minute you hit 5 days you were fined. We paid it.

If they explain to the school the situation they may even authorise it . My friend had cancer , went through all the chemo etc and decided they just needed a break away . Her youngest son went to a very strict grammar school and she had to sign an agreement saying she wouldn’t take holidays in term time . She explained to the school the situation and they agreed to it with no fine . Hope the same happens in your case .

This is such a lovely thing to offer to take your nephew, good luck - I really hope you can make it happen for him..my niece is desperate to come with us next time, I really wish I could pay for her...but I can't really...(well, I would pay but DH would say NO ! )

Please keep us updated as to whether you manage to arrange this & his reaction when you tell him he's going - he sounds a really lovely lad
