New York - which area is best to stay in?

Any hotel recommendations too?
Looking at booking an amendable trip for Christmas 2020.

Depends what your budget and requirements are. We did a flight and hotel with BA last year and stayed at the New York Edition on Madison Square Park. We thought it was a great location, a little walk through the park to the subway station, and for a quick bite the very first shake shack is in the garden. Eataly is also fab and just opposite the park. Loved the hotel, but appreciate you can get cheaper.

We stayed on 42nd street between 7th and 8th and it was a great location we felt, it was a few minutes to Times Square and a 15 min walk to Central Park or Empire State Building in the opposite direction. We loved New York, Manhattan is really walkable but the underground is also excellent. You could stay anywhere in Manhattan really and commute quickly to your destination.
We walked from near Times Square to Central Park, Union Station, TOTR, across the Highline to Greenwich village. We used the underground for Brooklyn Bridge and Downtown and to the flat iron building (which is very near a bath and body works) but we could have walked the last one. For all the bad press Times Square area gets, we thought it was ideal.
We stayed at a Hampton Inn, not the fanciest but felt safe and included a free breakfast every morning.

Personally I’d steer well clear of Times Square.
We stayed in Courtyard Chelsea which was pretty perfect location wise.

We went in February a few years ago, we stayed in a hotel called Hotel Metro, its very near the Empire State and about 10 minutes walk from Times Square. We loved going into Times Square in the evenings so the location was perfect for us. Lovely hotel, breakfast included, wine tasting every evening, friendly staff

The closer you are to Central Park uptown, the more expensive the hotel will be (generally). There are some beautiful hotels at lower cost downtown in the Financial district.

We stopped in upper west side on Broadway at the hotel beacon. Subway almost over the street, central park round the corner, since it was an apartment we could shop and eat from over the road. Plenty of nice eateries close by.

We went over Christmas and even bought a tree from a vendor outside the hotel

Thanks everyone, will take a look at all of these! I have been once before but years ago and don’t remember much in terms of locations. Just want to make sure we choose somewhere safe! Would imagine we would enjoy walking out into Times Square on an evening but I guess I’m not so sure... OH has never been before so this would be a special trip .

Club Quarters Hotel World Trade Centre . Right near 9/11 World Trade Memorial & the museum ( we spent 4hrs in there ) walking distance to Battery Park for ferry to Statue of Liberty, Free Staten Island Ferry, China Town , Little Italy, Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street, great shopping mail called Oculus just up the road from hotel , Subway near by which we used to get from and to the airport very easy and Time Square and Central Park . And the hotel lounge has complimentary Coffee/ Tea/ Hot Chocolate, Cold cans of drinks, and nice selection of snacks and fresh fruit and at 5pm Happy Hour free Wine . On every floor they have unlimited complimentary chilled bottle water .
