Just set your sat nav to avoid motorways
I know that road though and I’d rather drive up the I4 than that route Edited at 09:28 AM. |

Most obvious (if not fast) alternative would be north on US 27 and then East on 192. This route is good when the roads are quiet but there is potential to get caught at every set of lights on 192. Next best alternative is north on US 27 and then turn right (East) on to Florence Villa Grove Road. Turn left on to Westside Road at the Westside School junction and either carry all the way to 192, or take a right on to Funie Steed Road. You can keep going and turn left just before the road becomes more of a track and then go straight over the 192 on to the Sherbeth Road which will take you in to Disney from the Animal Kingdom side. This is a Dibb favourite.
Last year we found an alternative which is much the same as this but turn left off Florence Villa at Westside as above but then continue straight across 192 on to Avalon Road. You can then take a right on to Hartzog which takes you all the way to Western Way and in to Disney from Animal Kingdom. This route is VERY quiet and our preferred now but watch out for the 90 degree bend! Edit: Sorry, didn't read that you were aiming for Universal and not Disney! |

The road works are North of Universal and aren't the problem. From the junction with 27 past Disney Springs can be very slow every morning due purely to the large number of cars.
OP where exactly are you staying? "Davenport" does not mean much as it is used to cover a large area. There isn't a good alternative that is always quicker to Universal. I drive long distances weekly and always check the route before I set off in Google Maps. If there are extra delays I can then avoid the area. 429 for instance is a good choice to get to Downtown Orlando from where I live near Animal Kingdom but only when I4 has an accident.

I would try going through Disney Springs and then up South Apopka Vineland Road, turn right onto Wallace Road and follow the signs. Alternatively, Disney Springs, Palm Parkway, Turkey Lake Road.
