Newlyweds in the Caribbean: Curse of the DLXDDP - Day 6 - Grand Cayman

Newlyweds in the Caribbean: Curse of the DLXDDP - Day 6 - Grand Cayman

Index

Tuesday 4th September

Grand Cayman

I had the perfect wake up call this morning – french toast, a mickey waffle and a hot chocolate. Made complete with a caramel sauce.

Ollie had been up to Cabanas already to get a drink and returned with these goodies. It was only 7.45am, but I let him off as he brought me breakfast.

Today the ship was docking in Grand Cayman. Our port adventure meet time was a bit later this morning (11.45am) as the ship docked a bit later today.

This meant we had time today for a leisurely breakfast, so we got ready and then headed down to Royal Court for breakfast number two. Love the cruise life!

I was still feeling rough this morning with my cold so ordered a cup of hot water, so I could add a lemsip sachet to it (I always come on holiday prepared as I always get a cold!). Now that’s a nice shade of yellow….

I also had a hot chocolate.

I’m assuming that Ollie had a juice.

They were almost out of pastries this morning leaving us with limited choice, which was a shame. I was just about able to get a pain au chocolat after our server checked with another server.

I was craving stodgy food and sugar, so chose the - Disney Cruise Line Breakfast Trio - French Toast, Belgian Waffle and Buttermilk Pancakes served with Cinnamon Butter, Syrup and Whipped Cream accompanied with Bacon

I swapped the bacon out for a sausage, as American bacon is just not the same. Not that I’m sure either particularly go with pancakes and waffles.

The pancake was just ok, but the French toast and waffle (although not Mickey shaped, which is just not as fun) were really good. The server tried to pour syrup over my breakfast, but I like to dunk food into the syrup, rather than having it poured over. He gave me a weird look when I asked for some syrup on the side plate.

I have no picture of Ollie’s breakfast, but he probably had had Traditional Eggs Benedict - Toasted English Muffin with Grilled Canadian Bacon served with Poached Egg topped with Hollandaise Sauce, grilled Roma Tomatoes and link Sausages. I’m going to guess that he also added some hash browns. If he didn’t add these, he probably wished he had!

A lady from an older couple at the table next to us started chatting to us. They were celebrating a big anniversary and her husband was quite happy to be left alone and let her talk to us!

She asked to see a wedding photo, so Ollie showed her one on his phone. She then took it off him and managed to scroll through most of his photos before we realised! I hope she enjoyed the food photos, pictures of dogs and some inappropriate gifs.

After breakfast, we wanted to catch the Woody and Buzz meet and greet. I liked how there were different characters onboard the ship, as well as the fab five and princesses.

Woody was out at 9.45 and they closed the line fairly early as it was quite long. Woody was fine but we didn’t get much interaction.

We rejoined the line straight away for Buzz, who was great. He loved Ollie’s lanyard which had the aliens from Toy Story on. We also did the Buzz pose with him.

Love this just by guest services.

It was now time to sun cream up for the day, which again took a long time. I also decided to wear some light weight shorts today, to avoid burning the strip on my back when snorkelling. We also spent some time chilling on the verandah.

Our meet time was 11.45am and the tour would be a few hours. This made things a bit awkward trying to plan lunch (yes, I am always thinking of my stomach!)

We decided to grab some snacks from the pool deck around 11.15am (the only lunch option open at this time, other than room service) to tide us over. I of course had tenders and some pizza. Ollie had the same and a philli cheese steak (oops, no pictures). He really made the most of the different offerings each day.

In case anyone’s counting, I think that makes 3 meals by 11.30am…

We checked in for our tour with a few minutes to go, given our stickers (today we were Pluto) and were off straight away. No hanging around for latecomers here.

Again, they were handing out towels to take on excursion. This time making jokes that they had raised the towels from napkins and wanted to make sure they returned!

Grand Cayman is a tender port, so our group was escorted onto the next tender boat.

There was also a pirate ship in the water, which was fun.

Our excursion today was - Catamaran, Reef and Kittiwake Snorkel Sail (G36)

Disney blurb –

Set sail aboard a luxurious catamaran for a 2.5-hour sailing and snorkeling adventure along beautiful Seven Mile Beach.

Marvel at 2 snorkeling stops—one above colorful coral reefs and the other above Grand Cayman's newest shipwreck!

On this adventure you will...

• Start your tour with a short, 10-minute air-conditioned bus transfer to Seven Mile Beach, where you will board a luxurious catamaran and meet your crew.
• After a safety briefing, head out for a short sail to the first of 2 snorkeling stops. Enjoy about 45 minutes of snorkel time at the USS Kittiwake shipwreck. The Kittiwake is the newest warship sunken off the coast of Grand Cayman.
• Move onto the second snorkel destination, a shallow reef, where schools of fish and abundant marine life await your approximate 45-minute exploration.
• Relax on the return sail to Sea Grape Beach and enjoy complimentary water and lemonade.
• Arrive in Georgetown after the roughly 10-minute transfer. From here, you can shop on your own or return to the ship.

Our ‘motorcoach’ was waiting for us and it took around 15 minutes to transfer to the 7 mile beach.

Here is our catamaran -

I’ve never been on a catamaran before and wasn’t sure how I would fare as I’m not great on small boats (obviously cruise ships are fine ) I don’t know if it was the calm Caribbean waters or the steady catamaran, but I was absolutely fine.

We had to sign waivers before climbing on board (again, we could have been signing anything…)

Once on board we were introduced to the crew, who went through some health and safety bits and pieces, as we took the 20 minute journey over to the USS Kittiwake. This was a US submarine rescue vessel, which was intentionally sunk in Grand Cayman.

I’m glad I had a gentler introduction to snorkeling yesterday, as today we had to get off in the middle of some very deep sea! Again, I’m glad we had our own snorkels as they looked more pristine than the ones on offer!

We had about 45 minutes of snorkeling round the site. I was quite happy to paddle at the surface but Ollie swum down a bit.

Lots of scuba divers exploring the wreck.

Despite being quite a few people around, the really deep water felt very serene.

They sounded a loud horn to signal for us to climb back on board and took us 10 minutes across the water for our next snorkelling stop.

It was shallower here and you were allowed to take the slide at the back of the catamaran to get into the water!

The coral reefs here were beautiful and so colourful.

This fish looked sparkly in real life -

Again we had about 45 minutes here to explore.

When we got back onto the catamaran we sat at the front of the boat on the netting, so we could see the water underneath us.

This was one of those moments that felt really ‘honeymoon-y’ – I’m pretty sure being on a boat on the water in the Caribbean is what you’re supposed to do on honeymoon!

Ollie went to get us a rum punch to share, for $10. Wow, this was strong. Ollie watched them put in 4 types of rum, as the bartender seemed to be making it up as she went along!

The journey back to the beach took about 30 minutes and it was really relaxing sat in the sun.

I really enjoyed this excursion. There was plenty of snorkelling time and it felt quite decadent being on the catamaran.

Once we disembarked, we hoped onto the bus back to the port area. We saw a large iguana with two babies just chilling whilst we were waiting, as you do.

Once back at the port we visited a few of the nearby shops to buy the obligatory magnet (a bit more expensive than Cozumel, probably a couple of dollars).

We also found some wifi to check emails and sort out something with the fairfx cards (our fault, not theirs. They were very helpful)

We really enjoyed wandering around the port area in Grand Cayman. You could tell it was a more affluent port.

We managed to get on a full tender boat just before it left back to the ship.

Pretty view

Once back on board we headed up to the pool deck for some snacks. Our early lunch was a distant memory, so we fancied a late lunch as well! Ollie had a philli cheese steak and I probably had some tenders!

Back in the room we showered and got ready to head down for a comedy show in the Tube at 6.15pm. Aladdin was showing again in the theatre, so we decided to see Maryellen Hooper, who was doing an adult only comedy set.

Her set was all about resenting her children and her husband and was very funny.

After the show I worked out I could fit in a nap before dinner! Much needed, particularly as we knew the next day would be very busy.

Dinner tonight was in Enchanted Garden again, this time for the Prince and Princess menu (sorry, no pictures of the restaurant again!)

One pair of our tablemates didn’t make it to dinner tonight, so it was just the four of us.

To start with we both had the Princess Tiana’s sautéed shrimp - on jambalaya rice

Sorry, all my food photos have come out blurry from this evening! It was tasty though and the rice had a good flavour.

I then had the Snow White’s wild forrest mushroom soup.

I enjoyed this, but I suppose mushroom soup isn’t the most exciting thing in the world.

Ollie went for the Coronation of mixed leaves – vine tomatoes, blue cheese, apples, candied walnuts and aged red wine vinegar

He chose this mainly because it came with cheese, although the photo does looks very green- heavy!

For mains, we both went for the New York strip steak “Fitzherbert” – with truffled layered potatoes, honey parsnips and buttered spinach with a pepper sauce on the side

I decided to order steak after seeing that dishes on previous nights had been cooked as expected (ie not well done). This was cooked as ordered and was really big! I’m a slow eater and was still going long after everyone had finished. Ana asked if it was ok to bring out the dessert menus – I really didn’t mind!

For dessert I had the White chocolate bread pudding – with praline sauce and vanilla ice cream.

I promise there was bread pudding under the ice cream! I’m a big bread pudding fan (‘Ohana – I’m looking at you!) and this didn’t disappoint

Ollie went for Prince Naveen’s caramel banana crème pie – caramel toffee based topped with banana and abundance of whipped cream, which was my second choice of the menu.

I tried a bite and can confirm it was also a good choice.

We were chatting away to our table mates all through dinner and agreed to meet them for a drink after dinner.

We met up in La Piazza (which is beautiful if always quiet), and ended up in Oh La La. Twice in two nights for us – well, we are sophisticated champagne drinkers…

It was a ring of bubbles again for us, this time with an elderbubble and a pomegranate passion. We chatted away for a while, talking about accents and differences between the UK and USA.

During our drinks, some French maids came into the bar and starting dancing. Although this seemed weird at first, we then realised that some of the Walt Disney theatre cast were visiting all the adult areas and dancing. They are very talented and I did feel sorry for them dancing to only about 8 people in the bar.

After drinks, we said goodbye to our tablemates and headed to our stateroom.

This little guy was waiting for us -

Ollie had mentioned to our stateroom host how much he liked the Ghiradelli chocolates earlier in the day and asked if we could have some extra. He left us four each night from then on

Not being content with just the choccies, we ordered some late night room service.

Shockingly, I have no photos. We ordered some chocolate chip cookies and a mickey premium bar to make diy ice cream cookie sandwiches. I completely recommend this!

And what did we decide to watch whilst eating this? Cool Runnings of course! Had to be done with Jamaica coming up tomorrow. What a great end to a great day!

Day 7 - Jamaica
