We drove from Key West to Naples via alligator alley and I think it took around 6 hours but was a nice easy drive.

We have been down to the keys twice, the first time we drove as far as Key Largo, stopped at the tourist information and got a room for the night then carried on the next day, on the way back stayed at Naples for the night. The second time due to me mixing up my dates we drove straight there, left about 8am and arrived just after 3, the drive back though is very long and boring and I would only do it if you are used to driving long distances.
Its a beautiful place, lots to do, we had 3 night on key west and didnt cover everything. Very laid back, feels like a different country

We also did something similar and drove from Key West to Tampa via the Tamiami trail and the drive wasn't at all taxing, even with a large section of the i74 been closed because of a leaking hazmat tanker and rain of biblical proportions when we got to Tampa.

We really enjoyed seeing "real" Florida and have vowed to take a little more time to explore next time.
