Just The Four Of Us - Onsite at OKW - Day 12 - Ohana's, Blizzard Beach and Disney Springs

We woke early this morning for some reason although we had all slept well and were in good spirits. We were off to Ohana’s for breakfast and then to Blizzard Beach for a swim. Our breakfast booking was for 10:30 so we were in no rush. We lazed about in bed with coffee and OJ watching Disney Channel until about 9am

With only a couple of days left until we had to head home, we packed away half of the clothes and gave the room a bit of a tidy up. We all showered and dressed and packed the bags for swimming. We hopped into the car at 10am and headed over to Polynesian Resort for a character breakfast with Lila and Stitch. It was an easy drive which we managed with the help of GoogleMaps. We parked the car and walked through the lush tropical gardens to the entrance. We loved this resort. It overlooks Lake Buena Vista and has a huge bright atrium full of tropical flowers and surf memorabilia.

We were greeted at the entrance with lei garlands (flower necklaces) which Isla and Dylan were very pleased with. They got two each as the lovely cast member said that Jak Jak and Stitch would need one too. (they love a freebee!) We soon found our way up the stairs to the restaurant. We checked in and sat on some huge sofas to wait to be called to a table. Within a few minutes our Server, Trudy came to get us and led us through the dining room to a table by the window…lovely.

It’s a family style buffet here so other than the usual visit from the chef to arrange gluten free pancakes, soya milk and decaffeinated coffee (oh what fun) it was a simple matter of ordering drinks. Kirsten and I decided to go for breakfast cocktails (well we are on holiday!) so I ordered a Wasabi Bloody Mary and Kirsten went for a Mimosa. Both of these were great and really hit the mark. Isla and Dylan went for cocktails of their own made with tropical juice and lots of ice, these were great too. These were brought to the table along with some very nice pineapple bread which everyone else devoured. Isla commented that this bread was the perfect ‘Daddy Deterrent’ as it contained milk, gluten and pineapple. How we all laughed! (damned intolerances and allergies!).

Trudy brought our breakfast out along with coffee for Kirsten and I and more tropical juice for everyone. Sausages, bacon, waffles, eggs, fried potatoes and biscuits (does anyone like biscuits?)

The food was great and we were soon tucking in. Our table was crammed with food but not for long as we quickly worked our way through most of the skillet. As we were eating the characters arrived and visited us at the table. Isla had been looking forward to meeting her favourite Disney character Stitch for a while now and was hopping up and down with excitement by the time he arrived. Stitch was lovely, he was very cuddly and spent a long time at our table playing about and posing for photo’s.

Autographs were collected from Stitch, Mickey and Lola and then the children were given merakkas and they all went on a mad dance around the huge dining hall….Brilliant. Isla and Dylan loved this (Isla is just about young enough to love the silly stuff too) and by the time they were back the table had been cleared and the bill sorted too.

We’d had a great breakfast but it was getting late and we wanted to get to the pool. We stopped at the shop in the foyer to buy Isla a cute Stitch dress that she’s been eyeing up all holiday and then went out to the car. We stopped on the way for a photo with this guy…

Photo’s done we were soon in the car and heading for Blizzard Beach. It was another very hot day and the sun was out with force. We parked up and once we were in Kirsten went to the shop to buy some sun block. Isla and Dylan struck a pose with Goofy while we waited for her.

Once sun cream was on we looked around for some seats and after about 5 minutes we found a spot which was nicely shaded and relatively close to the wave pool. Goggles on, the kids rushed of for a swim until they were called over after about half an hour to have some lunch from the Avalunch QS place very close to our loungers.

We decided on Tatter Toppers (oven crunchies with all the usual nacho toppings) and turkey salad with cheesy chips. It was beers for the adults and sprite for the kids. There was quite a long queue and annoyingly I only found out after standing waiting for 20 minutes that the meals I had wanted to order were not available. (we wanted pulled pork sliders and a chicken salad). The food was ok. Nothing special and of course overpriced but since we weren’t paying OOP we didn’t mind too much.

After lunch we all headed off together to check out the slides. The queues here were not too bad and so we managed to try three different slides and rides (no idea what they were called, sorry). We all thoroughly enjoyed these with some pretty impressive performances from the kids on some scarily big slides. We headed back to our loungers via a couple of laps on the lazy river and were having a doze while Isla and Dylan had another swim.

I nipped off for a cheeky margarita at one of the cocktail bars and returned with a funnel cake and strawberries. This vanished within minutes and we all agreed it was well worth a snack credit…lovely!

We headed back on the lazy river and into the wave pool for a while and then the sky began to cloud over and the temperature dropped. We called the kids back to the loungers but as we had just grabbed a couple more beers from the nearest booze shack we decided to sit this one out and see if the weather improved.

The announcement soon came over the loud speakers that the pool was closing and people began to pack up and leave the park. Then the rain came…We headed under the cover of some convenient gazebos and were soon joined by a lovely family from West London. We were all very cosy sharing loungers and seats and chatting and joking away as the rain came down. These guys had all just bought cocktails and were also keen to squeeze the maximum enjoyment out of their day so with a stubborn determination we all decided to see if the storm would pass over... It didn’t.

It soon become clear that the park would close as the storm got worse. By the time we got to the front of the park it was hammering it down and blowing a gale, we were amongst the last to get there and the changing rooms were in the process of being closed. Kirsten and Isla were changed and ready within a few minutes but of course Dylan took ages to get changed and we were eventually done after about 20 minutes. We were the last ones out of the park and found the bus stops almost deserted.

We waited for ages, we were beginning to worry that the busses might have stopped and then finally a bus to Animal kingdom arrived to collect us and our now wet and slightly miserable children.

The sun came out again on the way to Animal Kingdom and after a few minutes in the sunshine we were almost dry when we got on our OKW connection. We were back at our room within a few minutes and after hot showers and a change of outfits we were ready for a trip over to Disney Springs for some Dinner and spot of retail therapy.

It was about 5pm by the time we were back at the Turtle Pond bus stop and waiting for our ride over to Disney Springs. The bus was soon with us and as it was almost empty we were able to grab the hot seats at the back. There were lots of soggy people about and we certainly felt good to be in fresh dry clothes. We arrived in Disney Springs and hit the shops. We had plenty of time to check out the huge Disney Store and then took a slow stroll around the shops and stalls. Dylan had his light sabre with him again and so there was plenty of posing and pretend fighting to be had.

We spent an hour or so mooching about and buying bits and bobs before we decided that we were hungry again. No table service meals planned for today but we were keen to try more of the QS available in Disney Springs so tonight we headed for Wolfgang Puck Express over at the Market Place. We stopped for a few pictures before we went in for dinner.

Wolfgang Puck’s is a nice enough place with a very simple and clean layout. We ordered our food at the front counter and took a buzzer to our table and waited for the food to arrive. We ordered pizza for Dylan and pasta for Isla, both from the children’s menu and then salmon and meatloaf for Kirsten and I. The food was good, decent portions and tasty but it wasn’t anything to write home about. We enjoyed our meal and washed it down with tropical juice for Isla and a lemonade for Dylan.

Kirsten and I went for a Pinot Grigio and a pint of IPA. We didn’t stop for pudding as we were all getting a bit tired and were keen to get back on the bus to OWK. We did stop on the way back to the bus stop as Isla and Kirsten had noticed an ATM for cupcakes and of course it would have been rude not to investigate further.

Isla and Dylan were very taken with the cupcake ATM and were soon the proud owners of a ‘red velvet’ and a ‘black and white’ complete with natty little ATM boxes. This topped the evening off perfectly and we soon had two very contented children bundled onto the bus and were off home (sitting on the hot seats) laden with bags from Disney Store, The Lefty Shop, Star Wars Launch Bay and Goofy’s sweet shop.

It was a quick ride back from Disney Springs and the kids were in bed within a few minutes and happy to drift off to the Radio4 comedy while we headed out to the balcony for the traditional margaritas and daily debrief. It had been another fun packed day and we had really enjoyed ourselves at Blizzard Beach. On reflection we do prefer Typhoon Lagoon over Blizzard Beach. We prefer the dining options at Typhoon Lagoon and find the layout easier to negotiate but both are great fun and we’d suggest a visit to both is worth while if you have the time.

Kirsten and I gave the room a thorough tidy up in preparation for the epic packing mission we would have to begin tomorrow. We were in Bed by 11pm and asleep within a few minutes as usual. Tomorrow was going to be our last full day at the wonderful Walt Disney World

The kids looked like they really enjoyed the meet with Stitch. I agree with you about TL, I can't really explain what is wrong with B&B and it is fun. It's just not TL I guess!

I can't believe you are having to do your packing, such a shame that it's coming to the end.

It looks like you had a great time at breakfast. We tried O'hana for dinner last trip but didn't really have a great experience. A lovely relaxed day at blizzard beach. We love those back seats on the bus too.
