Anyone applied for an ITIN (US tax number)?
It looks like a right faff. We have to send our passports off but only if they have a US entry stamp on them. No problem for three of us but our son’s passport doesn’t plus he lives in Singapore. (Here we go again!) The tax we paid is over $400 so hopefully worth doing.
We will have to wait to apply as we need our passports for our Alaska trip in May. Has anyone claimed back the FIRPTA themselves and how difficult was it? The cost for a US agent to do it for us was over $400 so that would have been pointless. |

We had to obtain ITINs when we bought our BLT contract from a non US owner as it is the purchaser who is responsible for ensuring the withholding tax is paid.
The resale agent put us in touch with a tax specialist who did it all for us. We emailed scanned copies of ID and had a SKPE interview for ID verification. She sent the completed forms to us for signature and return. Total cost 50 dollars. If and when we come to sell I think we will try claiming the FIRPTA ourselves.

We got ITINs and our tax back through a tax specialist when we sold one of our contracts. However, the tax was a lot more than the $400 we paid. It was a quick and easy process though.

We are hovering on the brink of selling our contracts. My head says sell and my heart says Noooooooooooooooo
I believe the charge is for each contract so that would be $1200 assuming it hasn't gone up. We have made substantial profits on our contracts so imagine we wouldn't get much if anything back?

We made a trip to a tax office after exchanging emails mails to apply for our ITIN, only to wait in a large line and find out it couldn’t be done in person.
We did end up posting the passports between trips but I wasn’t too happy doing it. When selling our DVC a number of years ago we did claim everything back ourselves. All of the forms were available on line it was just getting the ITIN that was the pain. I also found it frustrating that because it was joint names we had to both apply and claim half back each. Dawn
