Seat booking BA

Our flights for next February go on sales in a couple of weeks.

Looking at BA, there is a cost (min £30 each way) to book seats. With virgin there is an option to join flying club to check in early and so we never book seats. Is there a similar thing with BA?

No, the only ways to get free seat booking with BA are to have an infant or have status (ie be a regular traveller).

If you have any spare Avios points kicking around, you can use those to pay for seats. I've done this before as I randomly earn Avios but don't fly BA enough to bother saving them for a better use.

We have flown BA from Gatwick the last 3 years and have never paid for seats and have always been sat together. We were once separated on the internal transfer from Edinburgh but didn't mind as it was only an hour.

I was under the impression if you joined the Executive Club you can check in 24 hours before the flight (like I imagine everyone does) but being part of the club entitles you to change your allocated seats at this time?

Also check codeshare options with AA. AA seats are either free or significantly cheaper to book than BA.

Yes check in 24hrs beforehand to get seats. As long as you do that we always get seated together. Last time we even got extra leg room bulkhead seats. The cost to reserve seats on BA is such a rip off that I feel most people don't do it.

BA will allocate you seats and at 24 hr check in you can move only if there are available seats on your flight. If the flight is full you have to keep the allocated seats

Being a basic (Blue) BA Exec Club member makes zero difference to your ability to select or change seats. Anyone who is not on a "Basic Economy" fare can change their assigned seat to another available seat without charge (not sure if exit rows still attract a charge) once OLCI opens.

BAEC membership only influences seat selection privileges once you get to Bronze status or higher.
