Good morning everyone
I have wanted to write this post for a while now, but have had a hard time coming to terms with what has happened and I’m still not sure how to write it.
In January I started to feel very uncomfortable. I have seen three different doctors, with the last telling me it is mostly likely a type of pelvic pain for which the are no cures. Only a few different things to lighten the symptoms. I was given amitriptyline. But I have since spoken to many woman who have taken it and they tell me to stay well clear because they turn you into a vegetable. I’m currently waiting on my private healthcare to approve me seeing a gynaecologist as my doctor won’t refer me to one at my local NHS hospital. I am so afraid, this came on so suddenly, I’m 29 years old. I’ve joined groups on Facebook for pelvic pain and it’s awful, the bleakest place I can imagine, full of woman unable to work, walk or be intimate. I took my health for granted, I put off going exciting places till my daughter was older and I really wish I hadn’t. Please don’t ever put anything off.

I had pelvic pain, first op at 14. Endometriosis diagnosed many years (and operations) later. I was called a neurotic nurse on more than one occasion. Hysterectomy at 39. Now pain free.

I've also taken amytryptiline for shoulder pain, it certainly didn't turn me into a vegetable. It lessened my pain and enabled me to sleep so I could continue working. Drugs work differently for each individual, have you tried the amytryptiline?

I hope that they get to the cause of your pelvic pain soon, but the point of my post is that there can be light at the end of the tunnel.

I really really appreciate your reply. I haven’t tried taking it yet as I was so worried after being told I would loose my word recall and slow down. The word zombie was thrown around a lot. I should give it a try.

Can't comment on the pelvic pain (sorry you are going through this) but not aware of amytryptiline making you a vegetable. My Mum has been on it for years for lupus pain in the night and it really has nothing like that effect.

I had amytryptiline for my shoulder pain and I wasn’t a vegetable , they really helped but you do need to stick to the instructions on how to take as they do make you sleepy. What reason did the dr give for not referring you ?

I’m trying to find out, it’s so frustrating. Surely if you have a pelvic problem, you need a specialist, not a general practitioner.

I can only comment on the amitriptyline, I take it for tension headaches & it certainly hasnt made me a vegetable! It keeps my headaches away! You do have to be careful as it makes you very sleepy, but for me that's a good thing as it means I get a good nights sleep, just don't take it too late at night or I found I was a bit groggy first thing in the morning.

Mrs O. I would hate to be a GP as they are expected to be an expert in all matters. As we know nobody in this World can be.

My advice is get into see a Consultant ASAP and get an X Ray and more importantly an MRI scan
That hopefully will give you the answers you need and possibly identify a way forward.

In the interim I would take the GP's advice ref medication as that they are experts in and will have considered your issues, age, medical history etc and come up with the best option.

My Wife has been in a lot of pain with her groin/hip area since November. We have given up on the NHS and she is seeing a Consultant at Spire tomorrow.
If we have to fund an operation or even a hip replacement then so be it.

Best of luck.

Believe me, I don’t envy them either, that’s why I’m so keen to be seen by someone who specialises in the pelvic area. If it was a case of throwing money at the problem then I’m happy to do that. The surgery has promised that my notes will be send to axa today (3 weeks after I have given written consent) and axa will decide in 3 days if they are going to fund the private hospital in Aberdeen or not. If they will not, then I will pay myself. In the mean time I will try to find out why I have to travel to Aberdeen when there’s a hospital in Inverness that surely has someone who has experience will pelvic pain.

Mmm, distance doesn't worry me. We spent an age finding the top person for my Wifes shoulder operation. Money well spent.

We narrowed the list down to 3 for this current issue. My Wife then spoke to a Physio she knows and she recommended 1 of the 3 we had picked.

My view is go for the one with the best track record no matter where they are.
