A good Whisky/Whiskey

It’s our neighbour 50th in a couple months and we where thinking of getting him a bottle of whisky as a gift. Looking to spend about £50 to £60. He does like a quality dram, so is that even enough?
Even though I’m Scottish I don’t have a clue!

I would find out his favorite quality dram as I do with my Scottish FIL who's keen on Jameson's.
No point spending £50 £60 or whatever on something he doesn't even like.

p.s His favorite might only be £20 £30 ha

Will have to have a bit of a spy next time I’m in his house. The last bottle he brought over for him and my husband was Tamnavulin.

I've just had a quick google as never heard of this, which is not surprising as not exactly a connoisseour of whisky.
You might need a good spy as there seems to be a few variations of it.

My hubby loves Lagavulin 16 year old malt. It’s his Christmas tradition to buy a bottle and raise a glass in memory of a friend who recommended it to him years ago and who sadly died. I must admit I quite like it although I don’t normally drink whisky. It’s got a lovely smooth, smoky, peaty taste. It is quite expensive at around £60 or £70. Sometimes we get a bottle a bit cheaper at the airport in duty free if they have it.

There are so many choices, I would definitely do a bit of a secret squirrel and find out what he likes. My dh has quite a few different bottles, but he doesnt like peaty ones at all.

Tamnavulin is a Speyside, I would recommend one of these as that would appear to be a type he likes.
There are loads of theses, but a couple I’ve had bottles of are Aberlour, Balvenie, Dalwhinnie, and Macallan.

Whisky is very subjective, I love anything speyside but not a massive peat fan so the worst you could do is get me something too peaty.

Agree with Bondy, you can't go wrong with some classic speysides as listed, even the classic bottlings of things like Aberlour 12 or Dalwhinnie 15 you can get for around £30. Glenlivet or Glenfiddich are also quite easy drinkers

Laphroaig is my favourite but very peaty so an acquired taste.
If you want something he’d ‘probably’ like I’m a fan of Monkey Shoulder which I tend to prefer over many more expensive single malts (it’s a blend but a blend of 3 quality single malts for balance).
I’ve had all of the above mentioned bottles and all good also.
