We like Sutler's Bar & Kitchen in York. Check out their menu, it's different but good.

Not exactly playing in the same league as Wetherspoons though are they? Chain or not, they are one of the most popular restaurants in Glasgow and therefore worth a mention imo.

They have around 100 restaurants so not exactly a small chain, though, are they?
OP said she/he wanted non-chains so worth a mention IMO. Edited at 08:35 AM. |

There is a brilliant family run Greek restaurant in Glasgow called Elia. There are another two which I would recommend both are owned by same company but am not sure if thats a chain or not. One is Topolabamba and the other is Chakoo. Both are absolutey tremendous. the first is Mexican and the second is Bombay Street Food.

Many thanks to ALL of you for these excellent tips!
Can't wait to try some of these spots. I was last in York twenty years ago, it will be interesting to see how much has changed. As for Glasgow, I hold that Glaswegians are the friendliest people on this island. This thread just makes me more certain of that. And Disney_time, you are SO lucky to have a good local. Ours has all the atmosphere of a dentist's waiting room. SIGH. |

Fat Rascals at Betty’s are delicious. I would just worry I would get it wrong and ask for the Scottish character from Austin Powers by mistake...!

If you're in Glasgow then Bread Meats Bread is by far the best burger place in town, the city centre one is great or there is a bigger one in the west end.
For pizza I like bierre halle the best, pizza punks is nice too and for pasta my favourite is La Vita at George's Square. Other places like Bucks Bar, Bloc+, Smoke and Marthas are great too. |
