Hungry in Glasgow and York...Help?

Hello all!

My DS (11) and I will be in (first) York and (then) Glasgow later this summer. We're looking for tips on not-too-expensive, yummy, non-chain restaurants.

Any ideas?

Neither of us are at all finicky...but DS is allergic to shellfish.

All advice appreciated!

Best Italian ever is in Glasgow imo. Sartes in renfield st. Not a chain.
Also for something a little more refined look at The Wee Lochan. It’s lovely.
You will find lots of non chain places in and around the west end in Glasgow and up on sauchihall street.

For an unusual lunch in Glasgow we liked a place called “Where the monkey sleeps” for haggis bagels!

The wee Lochan is my local. It's fab. Number 4 First Bus from City Centre, every 10 minutes. Ask anyone on the bus to put you off at the right stop, and believe me, they will go out their way to do so. But it is very close to last stop on the route.

Betty’s in York is a real treat if you haven’t experienced there before.

Here are some of my Glasgow city centre favourites:

Italian - Viva on Bothwell Street or Sarti as mentioned earlier. Paesano is a love it or hate it pizza restaurant - I can’t stand it but others rave about it.

Chinese - Ho Wong, York Street (amazing food, try the businessman’s lunch)

Steak / ribs - Miller & Carter, St Vincent St, usually have to book in advance as it’s so popular.

There’s so much to choose from, enjoy your trip.

My favourite cafes in York are Cafe Concerto and Mannions for lunch. For an evening meal Mr P's Curious Tavern is very quirky but not sure if children are allowed. Stonegate Yard is nice, lots of eateries down Walmgate, nice cheapish pizza place.
