Allergic to hot chocolate?
My 7 YO dd seems to have developed an intolerance over the last 18 months. We've noticed that as soon as she drinks hot chocolate she complains of a tummy ache and then throws up within 5 / 10 mins and then she's fine. She is fine with dairy (she drinks alot of milk) so I think it must be cocoa however she can eat chocolate ?!
She doesn't eat a large amount of chocolate in one go but today although she didn't eat THAT much chocolate, she's eaten more than usual and has just been sick (no contact with anyone for weeks so I knows it's intolerance related as opposed to a bug). Just wondering if anyone knows what ingredient in chocolate could be causing it? Or why she has to eat larger quantities of chocolate but only 1 small cup of hot chocolate to cause it. Will take her to the GP when the pandemic is over but just wondered if anyone has something similar

We usually drink cadburys instant hot chocolate at home (the other times she's had it is in restaurants / coffee shops so i'm not sure).
She's absolutely fine with every other food and she eats pretty much anything. It just seems strange that it's a definte issue with just hot chocolate (and the chocolate eggs she ate today) x

A lot of cafes/coffee shops do use cadbury’s. It may be worth looking at the ingredients, and breaking them down. You already know milk and cocoa, so it would be a case of keeping a diary of all food and drink and cross referencing the ingredients to the hot chocolate.
I’m afraid it can be a long process to get to the bottom of it, but if you can’t figure it out on your own or she starts getting sick with other foods/drinks then definitely get her an appointment who can refer to the relevant specialist. Have you got the packaging from the eggs she ate today? Hope you find the cause quickly x Edited at 08:35 PM. |

Hi,
Not quite the same but I can’t drink hot chocolate as it leads to a headache/migraine, I know that in children migraines can sometimes show as a sore tummy/nausea. I can eat chocolate (loads of it! ) with no effect at all and all other hot milky drinks are fine but not hot chocolate. I love it aswell but just don’t have it anymore cus 9 times out of 10 I will end up with a severe headache 🤕

Thank you I will do that - Up until now it's only been hot chocolate causing the problem so we've just avoided it but hope it's not going to develop further. Yes i've got the boxes (she ate 1 and a half of the £1 eggs over the course of the day so i'm pretty sure it wasn't the quantity and more so the amount of ingredient but will have a look) x

I take it you just make it with water rather than hot milk?
My friend can't drink hot milk it makes her sick but she is fine with cold milk...

It does sound like this! we have never had problems with ordinary chocolate but then again she's not a huge chocolate eater - unlike me. She really loves hot chocolate though. it's her drink of choice when we go out to eat but since we had to make a mad dash down an alley at the York Christmas markets we've been avoiding it completely. Up until then we'd suspected it but I think that occasion made us realise it was defintely the culprit.

I cant drink hot milk, it makes me feel sick!
I started finding it after drinking lattes. I have skinny latte now (skimmed milk) and it's better. I think it must be the way the fat reacts to heat.
