Low-FODMAP Diet

Does anyone follow this and can you recommend any books on it?

My daughter (in her 20's) has been having tummy problems for a while now, Crohns was ruled out in a blood test last year. Whilst she waits for an ultrasound appointment to come through her GP had recommended that she tries this diet.

I can't help with the diet but I'm pretty sure you can't diagnosis or rule out Crohn's from a blood test or an ultrasound.

She would have to have a colonoscopy or a fecal calprotectin test (stool sample) to check the inflammation levels in her bowel.

Without any diagnosis I would be wary of changing her diet in case it makes things worse.

I'd be asking for a gastro referral. She would need a colonoscopy to rule out IBD and also coeliac disease.

I wouldn't be changing anything in my diet before a repeated blood test, stool sample and colonoscpy. Only then would I look at diet.

Thank you for the replies. The ultrasound is more to rule out gynae problems.

I’m really hoping that she gets a gastro referral, but it’s so hard to get a referral for anything here at the moment unless you have cancer indicators.

What are her symptoms? If bleeding then a colonoscopy should be done as standard and id be pushing for a referral.

There’s no bleeding.

She has a myriad of symptoms, but some may be caused by the tablets that she takes for periods which are awful. I had surgery for endometriosis earlier this year and I’m sure that she has this as well.

My sister has been plagued with tummy problems for several years. She has endometriosis too and has had issues with gall bladder. She is frequently sick and bloated. She had a camera down her to investigate issues and was then advised to follow this diet. She followed it pretty strictly for 6 weeks and is now reintroducing things. She says it did really help and is now managing to understand what particular things are her triggers and what she can eat.

This is a very difficult diet to follow properly and should ideally be explained by a qualified dietician. I followed it to try to identify foods which triggered my IBS. Unfortunately it didn't work for me.

A blood test alone will definitely not rule out Crohn’s or colitis. They need to at least do a stool sample to check the faecal calprotectin levels. If this is raised then they will definitely do a colonoscopy to do a definite diagnosis.
You can’t diagnose or rule out IBD with blood tests alone so I would definitely be chasing that up and don’t let the doctors fob you off. I wish I had known when Mason first started with symptoms, he was fobbed off for years with allergies until he was so poorly he couldn’t walk.
His early symptoms were tummy ache, leg rashes, swollen lips, aching legs, fatigue. These symptoms would come and go but at the beginning if 2020 they were constant and got worse, the bowel movements were up to 16 times a day, feeling or being sick, severely swollen lips, loosing mucus constantly, blood in stools, uncontrollable urges to go to the toilet and accidents especially when passing wind. Ulcers in mouth, painful anus etc hicups and sore throats all the time (he has it in his oesophageal too) extreme fatigue.
The symptoms continued to get worse over time.

My daughter has gyno issues and bowel issues. Her stool sample came back in the normal range so she has been diagnosed with IBS she doesn’t follow a certain diet but after keeping a food diary she avoids the foods that irritates her bowel. Its still not great to be honest snd she has been waiting to see someone for her periods for over 12 months.
Her bowel issues are, swollen stomach, stomach pains, gas and she needs to run to the toilet after eating certain foods.

There is a gluten-free blogger called Becky Excell. She is also low fodmap. She has 2 brilliant recipe books out (one is just out) and they have low fodmap adjustments on the recipes.

She has a website (glutenfreecuppatea) that you can look at, and also a big FB group (if you search her name on FB you'll find it).
