Using Debit card
Can I use my Co-operativebank debit card to get cash from cash machines while we’re at Disneyworld?

you can but both co-op and the cash machine operator will charge you (trust me it adds up). It might be worth you looking into a few of the popular options to at least avoid the bank charges

you will pay transaction fees for cash withdrawals plus any other charges applicable to the machine you are using. Get yourself a CC that has no transaction charges like the PO credit card, I think the Halifax Clarity CC does not charge for cash withdrawals, but might be wrong on this one, sure other dibbers will correct. Soon as you are home pay off the balance and no interest is incurred.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I have credit cards already but I wasn’t sure if the same transaction charges would apply to a debit card.

I've just ordered a Monzo card to use as a debit card. It has no fees and you can withdraw up to £200 per 30 days in cash without any fees. The app is very easy to use and it only took 3 days to get my card delivered. I'm impressed with it so far.
I'm always nervous about using my main debit card abroad in case it gets cloned, and keeping my holiday spends separate might also help me to stick to my budget |

Hi can I just ask why you think your card more likely to be cloned abroad than in the uk ? I have had my card cloned twice and both times were from UK businesses one a petrol station and one a corner shop. Have used my cards all over the world many many times without issue

On 29 trips to the USA and various European jaunts we have never had a card cloned. Wife had hers cloned in the UK a few years ago, someone was trying to buy multiple Dell Laptops, they'd already racked up over £4k before someone realised there was a problem. Most annoying thing was the Police wouldn't say where it had been cloned but we narrowed it down to a Petrol Station in Bradford.

The problem is that if a debit card is cloned it is your money from minute one. The money goes direct from your account whilst you are out of the country, your mortgage payment may bounce, your bills may bounce, you are abroad with time differences and trying to enjoy a holiday, but spending hours on the phone back to the UK to sort things out (my dad was an unlucky victim - there was a lot to sort out).
(I personally don't use a debit card in the UK either - except to withdraw my money at the ATM, and would not suggest cloning is any more or less likely here or there.) A credit card, by its very definition is not "your" money going direct from your account, there is some leeway in time to sort things out. |
