Passport renewal…5 years for children

Morning all

Wife seems a bit paranoid on the following.

My daughters passport was renewed in Jan 2018 and has a expiry date of Aug 2023.

My wife seems to think it’s only 5 years from the date of renewal which was Jan 2018 ..so for a trip this August to Mexico this august….There won’t be 6 months left when we return at end of August 2022

But the passport shows expiry of Aug 2023.

Anyone advise

I believe the additional months added can no longer be used therefore her renewal would be 5 years from start date making it expired Jan 22

For travel to the EU, this is correct, for the USA, the passport needs to be valid for the length of the visit. No need for 6 months after.

For America you only need to be on the day you return to the UK. so can use that passport for the US until end of August, its only in Europe that you can't use the last 6 months on it if it was added extra

Im unsure on Mexico though

Just remember you may need options if a flight is cancelled for example and you end up flying indirect.

It seems a large difference between Jan 22 and August 23 even allowing for the extra time at renewal ?

If the passport expires in August 2023, it will be fine for travel to Mexico in Aug 2022.

The issue with extra months on passports does not apply for Mexico, and in any case it does not apply to child passports anyway, even in the EU.

Your dates don’t quite make sense though. If the child passport expires in Aug 2023, the earliest it could have been issued is Dec 2017. The max number of extra months previously added on renewal was nine.

The issues with added months for travel to the EU do not apply to child passports. It’s not an “extra months rule”, it’s an “age of passport rule”. If the passport is less than 10 years old at time of travel, it is ok. An unexpired UK child passport with extra months will still be well under 10 years from date of issue.

Fine for USA, but for EU countries it will become useless in April this year as then it will be 4 years and 6 months old
