New York Hotel Help

Hi All

We are going for 3rd time lucky for NYC this Christmas

I currently have the Hyatt Place in Chelsea booked, however upon looking around, the rooms are super tiny, even by NYC standards.

I’ve found cheaper deals both Holiday Inn in the Financial district and the Courtyard by Marriott Manhattan / Upper East Side.

I’m 95% sure I’m going to change due to the price difference alone, but wondered if any had stayed at either of these and could give me advice

Thanks in Advance

Gill

Not stayed at either but my preference would be upper east side. Financial district very quiet that time of year plus slightly out of the way for most attractions

Thanks Colette.

I wasn’t sure if quiet would be better (at least as far as sleep goes ha ha). Honestly it’s a minefield. It’s so long since I’ve been and prices have shot up massively in the last few weeks.

I’ll keep looking!

Unusually I’m going to contradict Colette whose advise I normally nod along to.

We stayed at the HIE in LES and it was extremely noisy and I did not feel the surrounding area was particularly ‘safe’

I recognise safe is a state of mind but I would say that - when I read other Dibbers’ views - that my safe tolerance is a lot lower than many on here consider.

It may be that my hotel was far from the one you’re considering as wandering around LES on the main streets felt fine.

**** ignore this complete drivel as you’re talking about the Upper East Side ****

Thanks Karen, all inputs are appreciated.

I’ve switched us (for now!) to the Holiday Inn in the Financial District, which is right by the WTC I believe.

I know its a bit more “out of the way” but the fact it’s quieter is appealing to be honest. I keep hearing very mixed reviews about the usual areas of a night, so I’m hoping this will feel safer and the quiet will be appreciated as I’ll be with my 74 year old parents (plus I’m a granny myself ha ha)

It’s also £500+ cheaper than our original booking, the room is over 100 sq ft bigger, and the breakfast looks like a much better choice. My Mum has coeliac, so eating out isn’t always the cheapest (especially in city’s), so the thought is we can fill up on cooked breakfast there and maybe only need a snack before our evening meals.

Again, it’s fully cancellable and refundable, so I’ll keep an eye out for anything else and we can chop and change.

In case it helps, I’ll just throw this out! The quietest hotel we ever stayed in in NYC was in Murray Hill, a close walk to Grand Central. It was the Affinia Shelburne.

I’ve never stayed in the financial district, I guess you want to watch out for food and shops not being open at weekends and such?

Ooh thanks Karen. That’s not an area I’ve looked at, so I’ll have a check.
