He then said that a couple of vacancies for band 6’s on wards may become available early next year, however actively discouraged me to apply, advising me that I should learn to drive as he sees me more as a band 6 in the community, he also asked if I’d thought about moving into a different service! He also said or you could just stay as a band 5 and have less stress. He said ‘sometimes people are stupid and I worry how you would manage that’

He said that sometimes I am too overfamiliar and bolshy and he is concerned about how I would manage my stress levels (my stress levels were high last year...my DS was extremely unwell and I ended up having a breakdown a year ago and had 2 months off sick to get well) I feel this is being held against me and I told him this which he denied...since I returned to work in January this year I haven’t been getting overly stressed at all, I feel I’ve been supportive I’ve worked hard and only had 2 days off sick with a bug.
I should also add that although he has said all of this to me he actually asked me to transfer to his ward 6 months ago because he wanted a more experienced nurse...so I’m obviously not that bad at my job!
The whole thing has just left me feeling awful about myself and I am just thinking of staying as a band 5, keeping my head down and doing my job.
hmm, so with my union hat on you need to get this addressed as this type of behaviour is unacceptable, hint of bullying rather supportive.
he is just trying to get out of his bad management decision, unless they clearly stated that you could be appointed to a different band 6 job to the one applied for (so that everyone has the same opportunity) then they have not followed good practice.

He cannot hold your health issues against you, this could be discrimination

perhaps you could be a union rep yourself?

Hi Princess Aerial,
If I heard one of my band 7's behaving like this their would be hell to pay. of I was in your position I would be docunmenting this all and emailing him back. thanks hime for taking the time to talk and the write a summary of the conversation, why he said you weren't considered to express and interest in the posts. I would thank him for the feedback but that you are confused as to why he asked you to join the team if he felt you would be better off in another service (maybe another service with be better off with you if this is how he treats experienced staff) explain that you like working there and you would prefer some advice on what steps you could take to best equip to make transition into a leadership role. most importantly include the matron or higher so they are aware these conversation are taking place. it doesn't have to be aggressive but its important that he can read how his conversation was portrayed to you.

No advice at all on the job issues, apart from this, do not feel bad about yourself! My goodness, how awful of him to make you feel like that! Dust yourself down, and pick yourself up, hold your head high! Nurses are awesome. Plus you are a Princess remember? We are here if you need to chat.x
