Help for Dinner Party

Its our turn to host 2 other couples from our running group for dinner. At one couple's house we had a BBQ and at the other couple's house they had a couple of raclettes and did halloumi, various meats, garlic bread, potatoes, vegetables etc and we helped ourselves. Both worked quite well and were tasty yet quite casual.

I have NO IDEA what to cook now its our turn. If we have friends round usually I do Indian food, but one of our group can't do food with spices in and I don't want to be doing multiple meals. My second thought was fajitas, but that uses spices.

Ideally I want something with side dishes so people can pick and choose, and there needs to be a vegetarian option for me. Any suggestions? Maybe something italian?

Why don’t you do tapas? We’ve done that before for dinner parties and we’ve done lots of smaller tapas dishes (and all of the colder dishes you can prefer beforehand) and it always goes down really well!

jobs a good'un... not sure that constitutes a dinner party (cant say ive ever been to one) but it would suit me

I suppose dinner party makes it sound posher than intended... some grub and drinks with friends

I've never made tapas in my life, and I have never enjoyed my trips to Tapas restaurants, but I'm going to search and see if there's dishes which will suit me.

Homemade pizzas were people can chose their own toppings... use foccacia if u want to be posh 🤣🤣

Big vegetable lasagne - no spices, no need for veggie option, put out garlic bread, seasoned fries, mixed salad, coleslaw - and we would have roasted corn on the cob with it too - dripping with butter.

We’ve just had friends round and used our new Ooni 3 pizza oven. Pizzas cook in 60 seconds and it’s a fun alternative to a barbecue.

We made the dough in advance and everyone shaped their own and added their preferred toppings.

That sounds great. I was actually saying to a colleague an hour ago I'd love a pizza oven, but are they a bit of a gimmick? Worried I wouldn't use it after awhile? Are you finding that with yours?

I got a cover for it at the same time so it’s set up and ready to use in the garden. I think if it was in the shed or garage and took effort to get it ready it wouldn’t get used as often.

I’m still in the honeymoon stage and I’m enjoying researching and testing different dough recipes. I’m giving naan breads a go tomorrow too.

It went down well at our party and it was certainly easier than if I was doing a barbecue.
