Canvey is a little far for me thanks for the offer though

So are you saying the brakes wouldn't need bleeding? I'm all confused. Halfords said they couldn't see anything wrong the brakes (which I was surprised at as I thought they'd see me and think they could tell me anything ...

But there's obviously something wrong if the pedal is spongy and it takes more effort to stop and there's a loud noise every time i brake?

edit: I can't get it to the dealer for probably another two weeks when I can book a day off for holiday which is the annoying part!

Some dealership can pick up from your workplace or offer you a courtesy car whilst it's in. Give them a call.

It's in a different county, about 1.5 hour drive. Because otherwise i'd just disappear at lunch for a little while

Only a quick guess, remove the brake fluid cap under the bonnet and tell me if there is a vacuum almost like the cap is stuck on.
If it does then after check the pedal again to see if it improves, if it does then pehaps the airvent in the cap is blocked.

You are playing Russian roulette with your and other peoples lives. Get a garage ( not a fast fit centre ) to look at this tomorrow. Hopefully it isn't too serious, but you won't know until a professional has looked at it. Don't skirt around the truth, tell the mechanical what actually happened, that way he/she will get to the root of the problem quicker.

I went to kwik fit today for another free brake check and they've said they can't see anything wrong with the brakes, but can hear the noise also so did some efficiency tests on the brakes and they were 'near perfect' apparently.

So it's just an annoying noise then I guess, although i'd much rather not hear it

Too be honest k-f's brake guys aint bad, they have to have qualifications to work on brake they aint glorified tyre joeys.
And they sound like they have have it in brake rollers. Get it to a dealer and get them to conferm the noise. Hopefully itll be something silly.
