Deposits when hiring a car

Does anybody know roughly how much deposit is held on your credit card when hiring a car? I'm looking at hiring a Ford Escape SUV through Budget.
Thanks

The terms and conditions of Budget state the following for pre paid reservations. This is a 'lift' and relates to pay on collection but as can be seen it continues to talk about pre paid reservations.

When the rental is over we will process the reversal but the bank may take time to post it back to the account - unless you already paid toward your rental, in which case the hold will be only $100 USD. While this hold is in place, the funds will not be available for your use.

Ok thanks. So if Im reading it right, I should be charged $100 deposit? As I am pre-paying the entire rental before we go.

I would say so looking at their policy. My view is whoever you are with bank on $200. If it's less then a win win situation.
However there appears to be no clear picture with them all. Some get a hold and some don't!
I never have in the last 20 years.
Way back in the 70's I did, and that was when very few people had a card that was good for use in America so I had to get an Amex charge card.

Thankyou, that sounds ok then. I'm pretty sure we've always had a hold applied to our card, whoever we've hired from. But we do normally hire cars like Mustangs, so maybe it's because it's a higher class/premium car perhaps?

Mmm. Doubt it. I always get a Cadillac and still no hold with Alamo. Luck of the draw I suspect.

We've had anything from $2 'held' up to $250 over the years! It seems to be a bit hit and miss.
