Personally I find that advice to be wrong. The negatives of getting a new passport far outway the chances of such a natural disaster happening. Lets say a natural disaster or injury happens. You passport is still valid for your intended holiday. If say a disaster happens which means you fly out 2 days later you won't be flying back two days later. your original flight back will still be on the same day.

If a disaster or other problem occurs, the US authorities will temporarily extend the passport by up to 6 months. So, there’s no issue.
That’s why we don’t need 6 months remaining on the passport, because it’s already covered.

Even if the worst does happen and your can not fly until after your passport has expired you can still get home. It is possible to apply for a new passport whilst in the US and have it delivered to you, or you can apply for an emergency travel document (gov.uk/emergency-travel-...t/how-to-apply). The second of these I have had do in the past when our passports where stollen. We contacted the consulate and because we had the passport numbers, date of issue etc we were issued the emergency travel docoument the next day. That document was just a simple letter requesting UK border control to allow us back into the UK.

Exactly this. There are procedures and agreements in place to account for things like this. As the wording states, your passport only has to be valid, for visits to the US, for the length of your intended stay. If a volcano were to erupt or you broke your leg and had to stay longer that is unintentional and therefore, as above, there are courses of action that can be taken when you are able to travel.

Again, not a problem. You can apply online for an emergency travel document to get you home for £100.
So it's a case of weighing up the risk of something going wrong with your passport renewal or new ESTA application - which would possibly cost you your whole holiday - vs the need to arrange for an emergency document for £100 to get you home. We all have different levels of risk aversion, but people will never be stranded abroad because of an expired passport. |

A UK citizen holding an expired pp will still be welcomed home by UK Customs/Border as it continues to be viewed as an official ID document, so, all the, yeah but, no but, yeah but, I wasn't even there, are irrelevant and serve only to cause concern for travellers.
The decision to renew a trip valid pp is personal choice... bottomline, if trip date valid the pp ain't broken and doesn't need fixing, no matter how much angst is thrown around.
