My advice is to always have a good credit limit or indeed 2 x cards at least

An emergency medical issue can very quickly take you into thousands of dollars before the Insurance kicks in. I know as I have been there!
Sorting out an extra 5 days car hire, 5 days for a hotel room and 10% of a medical bill as a sign of 'good faith' Cost me over $5K and that was all within 6 hours of a hospital admission.

Another vote for the Halifax Clarity Card --always had great results with it but don't forget to tell them you will be using it in Florida before you go

Very good point Tom, something I'd not considered.

I wonder what happens if you have no available credit?!?

Oddly enough my Clarity, which I only use aboard, has one of highest credit limits of all my cards, in excess of £10K I believe, but I usually take at least one other.

I suspect a Hospital will agree to waive the 'good faith' requirement and will totally bill the Insurer.
However no card = no car etc.

Not a position I would like to be in. I suppose all one could do then is rely on Family and a Western Union transfer?

I've read a few posts, not many mind, where folks are talking about travelling without credit cards. Like you I would not be comfortable doing so.

Both are 'foreign transaction fee' free.

I use a Santander Zero card but thats closed to new customers.
I got a Santander Zero a couple of weeks ago, I didn't know this. Good to know it's a decent one to take with us though.

Mmm. Didn't know they had decided to reintroduce it until you posted. It certainly was stopped for a good few years.
The main reason I like it is the ease of paying their bill online as some cards have an archaic system.
