Mobile Road trips and toilet stops!

On UK trips we stop every couple of hours at service stations to stretch our legs and use the facilities. Are there convenient places to stop on all the major routes in California? I’m thinking for example of the trip between Los Angeles and Vegas. Has anyone ever got caught short and what did you do?!

They don't have services like we do, but most towns have McDonalds (or similar - usually signposted from the freeway) who have bathrooms, or truck stops (so fuel, shop, diner and bathroom). It's not what we are used to but gets the job done. I have been to a couple of 'services' style stops, but they are very few and far between.

All supermarkets over there have customer toilets so we tend to call in there, in very small towns sometimes they are also the staff toilets! A word of warning, in some places, these are often not like the toilets we have in Tesco for example. They are at the back of the store through the doors they bring the stock out of and not luxurious in any way!
We also use gas station toilets and fast food places as a final resort (only because we feel guilty if we’re not intending to buy anything!).

We do a lot of road trips over there and it really isn’t an issue

between LA and vegas, there are couple of towns were you can stop, it takes around 4 1/2 hours from LA. We tend to stop at Barstow and coming back we go to Calico ghost town for a wander round. You will also see a sign for a gift shop just off the freeway with "The cleanest toilets for miles" or something like that, they were ok

We’ve had a problem two or three times finding toilets in the thousand of miles we’ve travelled. Driving the Scenic Drive from Bryce to Capital Reef we stopped at a truck stop and only got as far as opening the car doors the smell was so awful. Driving up to Mesa Verde DD was desperate to go and we stopped at a marked toilet stop - a standard National Park hole in the ground that was ready to be emptied. She decided she could wait until we got to the top. Otherwise McDonalds or equivalent are in most towns, as are supermarkets large enough to have toilets. Love petrol stations where you get a key attached to a giant lump of wood ( had that in a Dairy Queen within sight of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia this year!)

We’ve toured a lot in America and every petrol station has rest rooms you can use. They are generally pretty clean and tidy and some petrol stations are huge, like a full on services.

Enjoy

When driving a long journey in the U.K., we have been known to take a plastic box and lid and a bottle of “rinsing” water, open both side doors and hide in the space between. Then dispose of the liquid, rinse out the bos, and put on the plastic top. Such a relief if desperate. 😄
