train users advice please

we are travelling to Gatwick airport on fri 1st of nov

we had originally booked our tickets from our home station direct to Gatwick. we have to get off the train at euston then get a tube to Victoria then another train to Gatwick.

if I use the train from home station to euston then walk to saint Pancras and get the train to Gatwick from there can I book saint Pancras to Gatwick open return and claim the refund from euston to Gatwick via Victoria that I didn't use when I get home.

Also we are meeting my daughter for dinner at euston and don't know how long we are likely to be. if I book an open return from saint Pancras to Gatwick can I get on any off peak train to Gatwick or does it have to be the time on the ticket

thanks for your help

I think Open Returns are now referred to as Anytime Returns.
There is a lot of information here.

nationalrail/times...pes/46550.aspx

I think the Anytime Returns are the most expensive fares as they don't restrict you to specific trains.

It might be worthwhile looking at a Super Off-Peak Return. Although I'm not sure if you have to specify a train for the outbound journey.

You would need to check the terms and conditions for the ticket and whether you can break your journey or not.
