Travel insurance rejecting claim

In my travel insurance I have airline end supplier failure, I put in a claim for of flights only for it to be refused as I paid via debit card. They have advised me in the most generic and poorly formatted letter that I must do a chargeback with my bank and unless the bank refuse the charge back my insurance does not cover me.

Am I missing something here? Should I not be able to claim for this with travel insurance I purchased for this exact reason... I guess they will be inundated with claims but this to me seems like as really shoddy way of trying to get out of paying me.

Am I being unreasonable with this? I am tempted to take this to the Ombudsman, can they really reject my claim on this basis?

I'm no expert in travel insurance claims, however I would read the T&C's thoroughly. It should be really clear in the 'what's covered' and 'what's not covered' sections in your policy booklet.

If it's not then I would be challenging their decision.

It could be a condition of the policy that you have to do a chargeback first, then supply proof of failure of chargeback, before cover bites under the policy.

I think it’s quite common. I remember insurance companies doing this with lost/delayed luggage. Making you claim from the airline first.

I seem to remember that the airline failure insurance kicks in if there is no other way of getting the money back.As you can claim charge back on debit cards you need to try this first. From the other topics re Thomas Cook a lot of people are getting their money back via charge back a lot quicker than people like me who have made a claim under sec 75.

My travel insurance states that I can only claim if claim with my credit card is unsuccessful.

The small print will state you have to reclaim the money by all legal means first. i.e. chargeback...

Do that first then if you have issues claim on travel insurance.

Another thing to take into account; if you claim via chargeback you get the full amount.
If you claim via insurance you may have to pay an excess...
