Virgin package due for renewal.

I today spoke with Virgin but the deal was awful... They want another £15 extra a month for 6 months and then it goes up to £30 extra.

I said this was too expensive and we have cancelled it...… they said we would have to return the boxes in 30 days etc..

I just wanted to ask Savvy Dibbers, should I now look at other options or do you think like I have heard before... Virgin do try and contact you again before you leave ? Maybe with another deal ?

Any help please. xxx

I had offers from Sky when I cancelled, ended up with ten free months. If that helps any. I would hold on for a few days after cancelling.

We have cancelled a couple of times and been told we would have to return the equipment etc etc.
They have always called us back a couple of a days later offering us a good deal, I would bet money that the same will happen to you

Virgin never did anything to try and retain our business. We ended up sticking with them for internet (as nothing else compares to VM for speed round here) and just went without digital TV for 6 months. We've now signed back up to VM on another 12 month contract and will probably do the same when it's over.

Did you speak to the call centre people, they will just let you leave normally and then you get a call from retentions. I am due to ring next month and just ask to be put through to retentions straight away now.

Always wait for the phone call from retentions who have better deals, and don't accept the first offer, tell them you'll think about it. They will call you back. If not, I go to one of the VM mobile vans and rejoin as a new customer under husband's name. I'm currently paying less this year than last year. Also, they've renamed their XL TV to Maxit which doesn't include kids channels, not sure if you need them, but just so you are aware. I got them included in my deal.

We cancelled as they wouldn't budge on the phone.

2 days later they phoned up and offered a cracking deal which we were delighted with and more than asked for when I rang myself.

They probably will ring you!

Conversation may go like this:

Q " We are sorry to see you leaving- did you like the service?"

Suggested answer: " I really did like it but it has just got too expensive, and Sky, BT are offering me a great deal (ring them up now and get prices). I would love to continue but am really struggling to afford it. I am just deciding who to go with, it is a shame because I liked Virgin. How do I return the equipment?"

Q " Let us see what we can do... we see you have X package, we could downgrade you and remove Y to make it cheaper"

Suggested answer: " Thanks but I do not want it downgrading- I like these (internet speed, features, channels etc) and as I say (Sky etc) are doing me this deal, I just hope they will be as good as Virgin were".

(note they are taught to first test the water to get within budget not by knocking money off but by downgrading the service.)

Q " How about we offer X"

Suggested answer- " That's still too expensive, but thanks anyway. Can you just confirm how I return the equipment".

At this stage be prepared to ring off- and they will likely call back, it may be days later. Remember they installed a fibre connection to your house, the actual internet and phone line costs them pennies now and is all profit. The TV they have to cover their costs.

You must always be prepared to cancel to get the best deal, and may actually have to cancel. Once I renewed the evening before it was due to switch off, at half price.
