We have been to both more than once, including Mexico last year and Dom Rep in 2018. I prefer Mexico overall, probably because the hotels we have stayed at there were much better quality and it’s easy to get out and about on your own more there I think. Having said that we did enjoy Dom Rep though.

Our latest trips were in late July /early August to both, but have also visited in March, May, November and December.

Both destinations had very bad sargassum on our last trips there. The beach at Mexico last year was unusable and smelt vile (we stayed at Moon Palace - this was our second stay here). Luckily the hotel was massive and there was loads to do away from the beach.

Loved getting the ferry over to Isla Mujeres and hiring a golf buggy to go around the island. No sargassum in sight there. Below is a pic with no filters. Absolutely stunning.

We also volunteered one night with the marine biologist who ran a conservation programme at our hotel and watched the turtles come onto the beach, lay eggs, then we dug the eggs up and reburied the eggs in a safe place and adopted the nest. Also got to release baby turtles. One of the best holiday highlights for me ever.

We have also visited Tulum, chichen itza and xel ha.

So absolutely loads to do in Mexico, which is why we enjoyed it so much. Other hotels we have stayed at in Mexico include iberostar paraiso maya and Valentin Imperial which are on the riveria maya. We’ve also stayed in Puerto Vallarta.

I have been to both- the Yucatan as someone mentions above is very nice, albeit it was many years since I was there. Or Cozumel.
Dominican Republic, you will not really go out- as there is a lot of poverty etc we found.
More trips out to be had in the Yucatan.

On closet inspection we noticed that by late afternoon the pool had a very strong urine smell to it, so we could no longer use the pool, the beach was full of seaweed., the people working were miserable and would only serve if they saw a dollar in the customers hand, to top it off they cut off the water for 48 hrs and only supplied 1 bottle of water each. When we returned home we found out after we left the hotel was closed due to legionaries disease. Oh and on our way to an excursion we saw someone been shot.
Are you sure you are not called Peter and Judith! ?

I have never been to Mexico but have been to Dominican 3 times and are due to go back in August. We love the Dominican and have never had a bad experience, we have always stayed at one of the Royalton hotels and would recommend them. You can come across some miserable staff but we encountered those in Disney last year.

You can not wonder out of your hotel but there is nothing around the area anyway but the excursions that you can book are fabulous days out.

I’ve been to the Dom Rep once and Riviera Maya, Mexico three times! Mexico seems to be the best for food, and beaches. Somehow the food, service and other things just weren’t as good in the Dom Rep, will definitely return to Mexico in the future. Cuba was the same, for the same amount of money Mexico far better!
