OP. Yes it was me who knew what the 'fish' smell was. I remember that post.

The reason I am wary of this is because we nearly lost our house! We bought a wreck back in the mid 80's and had to have a rewire before we moved in.

My Mates did it and said the front door bell which was on a transformer was fine and although old was not worth changing. Maybe 10 years later we took the kids out and came back after a few hours and the house stunk. I opened the under stairs cupboard and the transformer was glowing red hot and starting to drip molten plastic.
Power off and after it cooled I ripped it off and changed the bell for a battery one

The house stunk for weeks of rotten fish.

Oh em gee! Didn't expect that. I once had a burning smell - I'm actually cringing typing this. Had moved into my house and it was in my small back room that I was using for storage. Just a wee whiff of it now and then. The only electrical thing in there was my tumble dryer (unplugged by the way) and it wasn't the socket that smelled. No heat/nothing else to identify. Shrugged it off, but it did annoy me every now and then.
Finally after ages, I start putting things away and found the source of the smell. A box of Lapsang Souchong tea. Yeah...

Great that you found it. I once had a burning smell in the lounge, after crawling round for ages I found a moth had fried itself on our uplighter
