Hey there, we didn't do Galveston in the end. We looked into flying into Houston I believe but it was a cackhanded journey and one I couldn't be bothered with, sorry!

Don't do it!
Seriously, we decided to cruise out of Galveston for a change from Florida but I wish we'd known before we booked how ridiculously awkward it is - and we haven't even been yet! The airports in Houston are both a long way from Galveston port but that's just the tip of the iceberg. It's the transport options which are the big issue. You can't drop a hire care at the port without a $100 one way fee (each way) and the Shuttles to/from the airports are also mega expensive for a family of 4. We've had to pay for parking at the port and to keep the hire car the whole week we are cruising as there was no way around it. We need the car on the return date as our flight isn't until 20.30 that night, so we couldn't just do shuttles each way without sitting at the airports all day. In terms of flights/airports - BA fly directly into Houston (IAH), which is furthest from the port - 1 hour 15 mins drive. Houston Hobby (HOU) is closer but still a good 50 mins drive away. Let me know if you need anymore information, if I haven't put you off. |
