Best parks/attractions for blind visitors?
Hey all.
I'm going on my first ever trip to Orlando in March with six friends (wan't wait!), two of whom are totally blind, and one other who is significantly visually impaired. One also has spinal issues that mean she can't stand around for long periods, such as in queues. We're staying in Kissimmee in a place that has shuttle buses to the parks, so transport isn't a problem thankfully (I'm not sure I'm brave enough to try a hire car! We'll get taxis if we need them), but I was wondering if anyone could recommend parks and attractions that are particularly suited to blind visitors? Obviously physical ride sensations are enjoyable anyway, and they'll also be happy for the rest of us to do more visually oriented stuff too, but it would be nice to focus on things we can all get a lot out of ~Jes |

Hi, firstly welcome to the dibb, you may get more answers in the special needs section, along with loads of other helpful info. I am sure you will all have a great time! Dont forget Uber cabs are a fab convenient way of getting around quite cheaply. X

It's hard to think of attractions that would be specifically of interest to the visually impaired.
I've not experienced the updated version as yet, but Soarin' in Epcot is an attraction that simulates a hang-glider, and in addition it pumps out smells to match the visual experience. I don't think of it as particularly harsh in terms of movement either. The smells for us are one of the best aspects of this wonderful ride. Along the same lines, water rides like Pirates of the Caribbean have associated smells and sounds that are as much a part of the experience for sighted guests and it's hard to think of those attractions without the extra atmospheric details. Some like Haunted Mansion at Disney's Magic Kingdom have sound tracks that follow the ride along. Another aspect is touch, and SeaWorld has for example pools where you can feed the rays. Again a great experience for sighted guests, but a huge part of it is the touching sensations. Similarly Busch Gardens has a safari experience where you can pet giraffes Hope that helps a little and might prompt you to look for similar experiences here and online. |
