Depending on which sat nav you have you can usually buy the usa map which is not that much more than the price you say to rent a satnav.
The map is yours then and you can use it on your next trip.

This is what I do I just change my map over from uk map to usa map.

If you have a smartphone, there are a couple of free offline apps that we've used before.

Last year we used a 3 pay as you go sim topped up with £15 that gave us free calls and minutes and used google maps for navigation

I'd either buy the US maps for your satnav or get a smartphone app. I bought Navigon last time and going to use it again this time. Using a 3 payg sim card this time so free data!

There's a lot to be said for using something you're already familiar with, which is why I updated my Tom Tom sat nave prior to our last trip. You'll need to check your sat nav manufacturer website to see what they are offering for your model, then you can pay and download direct to your sat nav. Very useful too we found.

We found 3 data plus Google maps was better than sat nav in car or hertz one supplied too or nav app on phone. Just seemed so much more accurate.

We used Navfree on an iPhone in 2013. Free download, as the name suggests, and then the Florida map is a separate free download. Got us everywhere we needed to go with no problems and as the whole map resides on your device it doesn't need a data connection to operate.
