It’s a wonderfully simple concept - you download the Pokemon go app on your phone and start collecting little creatures (Pokemon) that appear on the game’s map of the real world. You do this by throwing Pokeballs at them on your screen. You can have battles with other people’s Pokemon and get together with others to fight bigger stronger Pokemon all at the same time - known as raids. It’s very social. You have a virtual bag of useful items that help you in the game - e.g treats called berries that you can feed to Pokemon to make them easier to catch, or make them more happy.

There are many features including making friends with others which is what the OP is trying to do. Once you are friends with other ‘Trainers’ you can exchange Pokémon with them (some types are rare, or can only be caught in other countries so you may have ones they don’t and vice versa) - it’s a modern version of football cards in that sense - except it’s mainly grownups that play now. Hope that helps to demystify it for you.
