Sunpass question

We are picking up 2 cars from Miami (Alamo and Hertz) and have read about the best option is to have a sunpass. Do these get automatically activated or do you have to speak to them at the desk to activate. Really not sure how it works as only ever flew into Orlando International or Sanford previously and never bothered about a sunpass.

Ideally I want to do skip the counter but didn't know if I need to go to the counter to activate the pass

Both Alamo and Hertz use photopass camera recognition, no transponders needed albeit there may be one in the car if it's from out of State.
With Alamo you can skip the counter at Miami so no need to see anybody.

and does it then just charge you the daily fee plus any tolls you pass?

Sorry I'm on the iPad so it's not that easy. This is the link that shows you all the prices. Alamo is brilliant.

cheers, just looking at that now, we are going for 33 days but I think Alamo cap the cost at $19.75 plus tolls and if I'm reading it correctly it just activates when you drive through. Just worked in case I racked up a load of fines!

Alamo and Hertz do not have the same policy

Alamo : you'll be charged $3.95 fee per usage day (24 hr. interval) you actually use the tolls.
it's capped at $19.75 for your whole rental period , so if you use it for 5 days, you might as well use it for the rest of the vacations
and you'll pay the tolls on top of these fees

Hertz is a bit more expensive.
you're charged $4.95 per rental day (unlike alamo where it's per 24hrs you actually use a toll)
it's capped at $24.95 per month
you'll pay the tolls on top of that

so let's say you hit 1 toll (just one) on a 14 days rental.
Alamo charges $3.95, Herz charges $24.95

ETA : I saw you rent for 33 days, so Hertz will charge $49.90 if you hit just one automatic toll.
alamo will be capped at $19.75 for the whole 33 days

you can use the system on both agencies without needing to see anyone.
system activates first time you hit a toll.

thanks we're actually going for 33 days so the Hertz one would be far more expensive, however the cars are already booked and paid for. Think we've got the better deal with Alamo
