What cruise line for med cruise
Hi we're looking at doing another cruise we have had a 3 and 7 night cruises with P O, Arcadia to Fjords loved that cruise and break to Belgium on Aurora bit dated we thought.
We are looking for a longer cruise maybe to Mediterranean 12/14 night has to be sailing from Southampton/uk We like the British feel to p o cruise. What other ships are close to PO style We are party of 4 late fifties / early sixties, did find PO didn't have a lot on sea days seemed a bit dated. We haven't done black tie night rather be casual/smart casual. Any recommendations, of company's with a bit more to do not so dressy up We do need British style food hubby is so fussy, so burgers chips, etch Thanks

Have a look at Princess, ‘sister’ cruise line to P&O. Many of the ships are the same basic design to the Ventura and Azura. The Britannia is the same design as Royal, Regal and Majestic.
Princess has a more American feel to it and is less formal, but if sailing out of Southampton, a good proportion of passengers are from the UK who do tend to dress up for formal night. Cruising in the Caribbean on Princess is very informal. The onboard currency is $ and bar prices are higher than P&O. Food wise, you will find the variety you are looking for, both in the main dining room and buffet. We are in the same age bracket as you and Princess is our cruise line of choice. |

Tui are supposed to be more casual and will have mainly British clientele so menu should be familiar.

Celebrity cruises are pretty good. An American line but the standards are similar to P & O.

I'd also look at Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas which does 14 day med itineraries out of Southampton. She's more American, but lots of dining options and not too formal. Lots to do on board and she's recently had a refurb.
I'd avoid her during the kids school holidays as she is a family friendly ship so might be overrun with kids. |

We've done two RCI cruises to the Med. Our first was Navigator from Rome and later the Independence from Southampton. We enjoyed both and would certainly cruise RCI again.
The advantage of going from Rome is that you are straight into the nice weather. Minor downsides are that I think our outbound LHR flight was around 7am and because they disembark very early we were back at Rome airport at around 9am for a 5pm flight. The advantage of Southampton though is that we leave home around 10am and park a short walk from the boat. Same homeward and back in the house for lunch. Downside is the three days sailing to the sun and crossing the Bay of Biscay. Mick

It’s the wasted days getting to / from the sun that put me off Southampton. We sailed to Norway. Obviously opposite direction but it was cold on deck. That’s ok on a Norway cruise but not when you are going to the med for heat.

The bay of biscay can be very rocky as well as cold- a lady from my work did a TUI cruise from Southampton and swore never again as she got so sick those first couple of days! But she just went again on a fly cruise to the med and loved it.
If it doesn't have to be Southampton (not sure how vital that is to you) then I'd also look at NCL out of Barcelona or similar. Done two with them and loved both. There's no fixed dining times and no formal nights. |

We crossed the Bay of Biscay in mid-June. We felt completely safe but they closed all the pools as the water was sloshing all over the decks.
