An August 2016 family trip to the West Coast.

Still a work in progress and still subject to change but here's what I've got so far. I imagine there will be parts of the trip that won't work but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

The travellers will be me, DH, DD(14), DD(12).

Travel dates: 03/08/16 - 25/08/16.

Our journey out is nothing if not convoluted. We're flying out to Belfast and will drive to Portstewart on the coast where we have a house. We'll stay there for a night before heading down to Dublin where our journey proper to California begins.

We fly out in the evening to LHR going BA Club. We'll stay overnight at the Sofitel at LHR. The next morning we fly out to LAX.

Our trip will then be as follows;

Santa Barbara: Harbor View Inn- 3 nights
Carmel: Lamplighter Inn - 2 nights
San Francisco: Pier 2620 at Fisherman's Wharf - 2 nights
Yosemite: The Ahawanee - 3 nights
Mammoth Lakes: Westin Monache - 2 nights
Palm Springs: Villa in Movie Colony - 3 nights
Anaheim: Villas at GCHotel: 1 bed - 5 nights
Then home from LAX to LHR
2 nights in London
Then back to Dublin via City Airport
Bank Hol back in Belfast
Belfast to Brum...

We had to ditch Vegas as we ran out of time but a good excuse to go back. Finding hotels with family rooms was also a bit of a pain through the usual websites; Hotels.com etc. There weren't many but going direct to the hotel often gave access to rooms for 4.

I hope the DDs aren't glued to their phones for the whole trip so we're trying to plan activities they'll enjoy and that's the next task.

Edited at 05:35 PM. Reason: Change of travel plans

Most standard American hotel rooms have two double or queen beds - so not always described as a family room , but will be big enough

They don't advertise "family" rooms here. As other have said most rooms have two queen beds.

I found that with a few of the older hotels on offer, La Playa Carmel being an example, the '2 double beds' rooms weren't available on third party booking sites. In these cases each time I entered 2 Ad, 2 Ch I was given two rooms.

For both La Playa and Fogcatcher I therefore spoke to the hotels direct as not all their types of accommodation are bookable through the 'hotels.com' type sites. I was then able to get the 2 double bed or suite accommodation. This wasn't an issue for the other motels/hotels as '2 double beds' appeared to be a standard offering.

Well, the plans have already been 'tweaked'.

3 nights in Santa Barbara will now be at the Harbor View Inn.

Our 1 night at The Fogcatcher has been ditched to move everything forward one night to give us 3 nights at Yosemite Lodge at the Falls, rather than the 2 originally pencilled in.

More "tweaks". Have just managed to get 3 nights at The Ahawanee in Yosemite so will swap this in place of Yosemite Lodge. Kept checking back as the hotel was showing as no availability and then the exact dates we needed became free.

It's definitely going to be a 'one time only' visit at those prices. If we come back, we'll bring a tent
