Cricut Cutters
Anyone know anything about these?
I seem to spend a fortune on glittery cake toppers so I think it would be best to make them myself. However, despite looking at the website, I have no clue which of the range I’d be able to get away with? I’d never be needing to cut fabric but may want to cut vinyl possibly. Mainly just glittery cardstock and gift tags etc. Do they all have the same software or would I have nicer fonts available if I spent more, or are the machines capable of cutting any font you can download? Also, there seem to be so many tools. If I’m only cutting card, will I be able to just go straight from the box or will I need extras from the outset? Many thanks in advance Edited at 09:49 AM. |

I have the first one they made, so it’s quite basic. I can cut card and vinyl. I have some software that lets me cut any design, But I am not sure if it’s still supported, I keep the laptop I have it installed in just for that purpose.
I can’t really advise on the software for the latest models but they should all cut card / vinyl although glittery card will blunt s blade very quickly. |

I have the Cricut Explore Air 2, which you can cut most things on, including glitter card.
You would be able to use the blade and cutting mat from the box so no extra equipment needed. You can get extra fonts by subscribing to Cricut access or by downloading from the internet and adding to Cricut Design Space which is really easy.

It's a few years since I used mine, but what I would say to check is whether you can use 3rd party SVG files with it.
I have a cricut mini, and could only use the cartridges from cricut. When I upgraded to an Eclips, I could use downloads from anywhere, which gave me a far greater range of files, for a lot less money including a lot of freebies, or design my own. It may have changed in the interim, or be dependent on your machine, but it was the one drawback I found with the cricut. On the other hand, it was a good starter machine to see what use, if any I'd get from one. Honestly, I think I prefer the metal dies over electronic for most things. /Mo |

I have this one too. Haven't used it loads, as having to get it out and use on the dining room table, and it's too much like hassle! However, we're converting a bedroom into a study/craft room, so really hope to get going with it properly.
I downloads fonts from dafont, which are free. I use some of the free svg sites to get svgs, and have also joined a few sites on FB (including a disney one) to get svgs that people design. I mainly cut vinyl, but have done a couple of cards, and have bought some glittery card with the intention of trying some cake toppers. |

I bought the Cricut Maker about two months ago and I love it! I have made so many different things, cake toppers, customised t-shirts, signs, Christmas decorations and more. I watched loads of YouTube videos (I really like the ones by Jennifer Maker) but there are lots of other people who do Cricut shows too.
I would check and see if there are any bundle deals as you will need a weeding tool and also a scraper to make it easy to use. I am not a fan of the Cricut vinyl, I get mine from MDP but there is also lots of choice from other craft stores and amazon. I also have the monthly subscription with Cricut for Design Space to access the extra fonts and images, however this isn’t a necessity. There are lots of different FB pages and websites that offer free SVG’s that you can upload directly into Design Space to make and then customise your own designs. I am still learning but having a ball doing it! |

Thank you all for the replies.
So it’s as easy as uploading you design and leaving it to it?

Thank you! I bought plain beads and then painted them red, threaded them onto twine and then added the ceramic star and vinyl. I bought a font that is similar to the Rae Dunn font and have been using it to put on anything I can find I am having withdrawals from shopping for her ceramics in the U.S.
I have also made some embroidery hoop wreaths and tree decorations. It is addictive |
