Chemotherapy advice- mouth ulcers
Hello,
Firstly I want to say thank for everyone who offered me insurance advice when I hid under another username a few weeks ago. I’m out of my cancer closet now and it’s a big relief. In July I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had surgery first followed by chemo. Not what I expected at 27 but hey ho. I’m hoping someone has some advice about mouth ulcers caused by chemotherapy. I have a mouth full and they are incredibly sore. I’ve got a nice mouthwash, bonjela and then I bought the children’s bonjela with lidocaine in to use just before I eat. If anyone could recommend anything but in particular a nice gentle toothpaste? I have 5 months left and it’s going to be very long at this rate 🙁 I am seeing my oncologist on Monday so can ask her for help then but just if anyone had any experience. Thank you 😊

Sorry to hear you are going through this! My mam went through this ten years ago when she was 52. The nurse recommended sucking on ice lollies. Hopefully that may help you? My mam is fine now and still working as a nurse at 62! Good luck with all your treatment x

I only have experience of “ordinary” mouth ulcers. The GP told me to use Dequadine lozenges by putting one on the ulcer and leaving it there to dissolve on its own. And repeat. He said that the treatment would halve the length of time I had the ulcer. He also said that they take two days to come before they are noticeable. That info may be of no assistance to you as I know you have many but I hope it helps in some way.
My own home remedy for ulcers I occasionally get on the inside of the front of my mouth next to my teeth is ... wait for it ... Nivea cream. Just dry the ulcer and spread a little Nivea on it. I find it helps to first remove the white stuff with something like a cotton bud. That stuff is what hurts me. So by removing it the cream gets to work earlier, or that is what I believe! If you do it, let me know how you get on. I will be really interested. Someone I know used to apply toothpaste but that never worked for me. Good luck, you have my heartfelt sympathy. mayoclinic/diseases-...s/art-20045486 Edited at 10:36 PM. |

Hi when I had chemo for breast cancer and had a sore mouth, I drank fresh pineapple juice and also ate fresh pineapple and papaya, this was recommended to me by oncology nurse, it did help at the time. But please check with your own team. Good luck. I am 5 years clear after surgery, chemo, and radiotherapy.

Hi!
I suffered with a very sore mouth during chemo for breast cancer. I was prescribed “gengigel” and it really helped. There are some great FB groups which offer fantastic support and advice, also, there is the Younger women’s group too. Feel free to PM me. Big hugs xxxx

Hi, i have just replied to your reply on my lashes post, thank you for that.
Wishing you good health and a speedy recovery. I can’t offer any advice really but when my sons mouth was painful and blistered they gave him glycerin swabs to wipe inside his mouth before food and any time it hurt. It really soothed it for him. |

Thank you all so much, going to make a list for my oncologist and a shopping list for me! The one on my lip has improved over night but I’ve developed a new one right under my top lip 🙁 the rest are still as annoying as yesterday!

This advice came from my mum’s Gp and not her oncologist : ascorbic acid - or as we know it Vitamin C. He prescribed high strength tablets for her and she didn’t have another ulcer again. Best wishes for your recovery x
