It's worth noting that I have found the VA Flying Club staff fantastically helpful when I have called them about Rewards flights. If you can't find flights for your dates, give them a call as they may be able to find an alternative routing for you. Also worth considering all UK airports (Gatwick/Manchester/Glasgow) as well as the option of flying into/back from Miami.

Next September will probably be my last trip and I'm planning on using miles plus money.

Yikes, thats alot. Not thinking of going yet but was considering using miles for our next trip. Is it a better option to just book a normal economy flight and use miles to upgrade to premium? Are there any restrictions to doing this? Thanks

You'd still have to pay the difference between the economy and premium taxes though. I looked at doing that for next year but by the time I'd paid out economy, then used miles to upgrade, then paid the upgraded taxes... well I'd got bored of the calculations by the time I got to the end

Just pay with miles, I can't see being any cheaper the other way.
Sept should be 45k miles for return I think, although the taxes are around £440 return per person
