We were in AMI from 16th to 23rd. Everything fine until our last day when we paid for a fishing trip, on the bay side the water was awful, it was black to look at and brown tinged on the beach. The gulf side was still lovely.

Maybe no official, but the newspapers are often running reports of flesh eating bacteria in the gulf this summer. If you search for flesh eating on Tampabay times you'll get quite a few hits.
tampabay/health/fles...know-20190702/ At least 2 people have died of the disease along the coast. It is a very long coastline, but that is a few more than have died of shark attacks in the gulf this year, so worth being cautious. Good news seems to be that that bacteria doesn't smell like red-tide, which for those not entering the water, but admiring te view is a good thing. |

Hi Fred, unfortunately there have been reports of the flesh eating bacteria where concentrations are higher when the water is warmer. It's important to note that health officials state necrotizing fasciitis and severe infections from vibrio vulnificus are rare, their advice is to take particular care if one has an open cut/sore.
Understandably ongoing water/bacteria issues aren't what visitors want to hear. Officials advise beaches are open but caution is urged, leaving families to decide what precautions, if any, to take.

We are out here and using Gasparilla and Manitoba beaches without any problems.

We were down on Englewood beach last night watching the drummers circle at sunset. It was great fun with about 100 people involved. Some drumming, doing hula hoops, spinning clubs and even one guy doing something with fire ( I kept well back)
I digress, the beach was beautiful, the water sparklingly clear. Plenty of birds & fish. We watched fish jumping near the shore line. No evidence of any problems. There were many people including children splashing or swimming in the water. Most were locals. My son & his girlfriend were down at Bocca Grand on Saturday and it was similar. They watched stingray jumping out of the water near one lady who looked petrified 😜 Please don't worry about Red Tide. There is no mention of it done here near Manasota Key. 😎
