Great lakes advice please

So we're thinking of a summer trip next year and considering somewhere lake side. Trouble is I have no idea where to start!
Does anyone have any experience of such a trip? Any wise words? All advice appreciated.

Not sure what sort of trip you are looking for, scenic or activity based; touring or exploring from central place? We love rollercoasters do did a trip a couple of years ago to visit Cedar Point on the edge of Lake Eerie (as well as a few other parks). We also included Niagara Falls on this trip. Another place we enjoyed was the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, definitely worth a couple of hours. Sorry cant help with any more, but Im sure someone will be along with some ideas.

I'm currently writing our trip report - we started and finished in Chicago and drove around Lake Michigan, spending time on Lake Superior and Lake Huron as well.
