Last year, we had a week at the Elba Lanzarote Royal Village Resort in Playa Blanca. Excellent “suite” accommodation in bungalows with 4 to a block, plus you have your own patio with sun beds.

It was quite a decent location as it was a pleasant 20-30 minute stroll to the main “promenade” at Playa Blanca, which helped to walk off some of the food!

We have also just returned from a short break in Tenerife. This was half board in a small town called El Medano, adults only hotel (Arenas del Mar) about 15 mins from the airport. Another suite-style room, and the hotel was a 20 minute walk from town.

However, the reason for me mentioning this hotel is that the cost of drinks in both the hotel and town were ridiculously cheap - e2.00 for a small beer, e4.00 for a cocktail, and e5.00 for a “craft” gin and tonic.

We could also swap our dinner for lunch, which we did on a couple of days, and enjoyed a couple of very reasonably priced meals in the town. Nice to have a bit of variety, and it did seem to be more a locals place.

We have literally just got back from the Riu Yucatan in Playacar in Mexico. Playacar is a fab location within a gated community so very safe, but just outside is fifth avenue which is great if you want to escape the all inclusive for a while. We also got a ferry to Cozumel for the day which offers the world’s second biggest barrier reef - amazing snorkelling if that’s your thing.

The food in our hotel was very good, and you can also use the other Riu’s on the complex. Riu Yucatan and Riu Playacar are very similar with direct beach access - we loved the Yucatan though as we had monkeys and coatis onsite which was entertaining! Riu Tequila is also good but a short walk to the beach. There are also two Riu Palaces which are lovely but more expensive (you can’t use their facilities unless you’re staying in one). There is also a Riu Lupita but that is much further from the beach so I wouldn’t recommend that one.

Try TRS Yucatan (not RUI Yucatan) part of the palladium group in Mexico. Just returned and it was fabulous - we booked while we were there to go back next year. 24 hours AI, adult only with 5* restaurants etc. Available with TUI, First Choice, TC and bluebay travel or direct
