It's primarily due to September being a quiet time of year (US school's have gone back) and the weather (Dorian put lots of people off).

The ticket prices haven't increased since earlier this year - in fact the US prices for September are less than in summer. And yet people were saying Easter and Summer were busy so clearly the prices hadn't put them off.

And, as far as I'm aware, there are no construction issues? Disney originally scheduled Galaxy's Edge at WDW to open in "late Fall" - which, we now know, meant early December. They decided to open all of it apart from RotR around 3 months earlier than planned. I suspect they may have done that to try and reduce the impact and therefore crowds - and maybe also to get sales of Star Wars merchandise started earlier.

It's not like it's busy anywhere else. The other parks (Universal, Seaworld) are quiet too as is Orlando in general (as DonnaD says).

Annual passes did, Disney are trying to out price them as they feel there are too many in the wild and felt it was causing issues inside the parks. It seems to be working as not many people are re-issuing their Annual Passes and are putting it to an all out vacation as and when they feel they will get their $$ worth.

They did have constructions issues and plenty of them. Rise of the Resistance was very problematic on both parks; ride vehicles failed ADA standards. Too small doors for people with disabilities so they have had to retrofit ADA doors to each vehicle. California put in the wrong floor sensors and had to dig the concrete floor out to replace them. Florida building was completely flooded as the building was initially built without any water ducts, water built up on the roof with nowhere to go and ultimately flooded the entire building. Arguments were had between management, contractors and designers about it as its Florida Building 101 to have water ducts on a building in Florida with its climate. These issues are separate from the ride technical issues which again and not surprisingly caused more delays, its a very advanced ride and has taken years to finesse.

Very interesting info about the problems encountered while building Rise of the Resistance, thanks for sharing!

Just curious... do you know an Imagineer... or are you one yourself? Sounds pretty much like insider information! 😉

Disney put up the price of Annual passes in June.

The majority of people with annual passes will not have had to renew in the last 2 months. I suspect 80% (around 10/12th) of people either renewed before the price increases or have annual passes that are still valid and don't yet need to be renewed. So I would still expect the vast majority of annual pass holders to be able to visit the WDW parks but, yes, there will be small reduction in guest numbers due to this.

BTW, do you have some stats regarding "not many people are reissuing their Annual Passes"? Is there a website somewhere that states the number?

I hadn't heard about these issues at WDW - do you have a link to a website explaining more about these? Considering the ride will be opening at about the time that Disney originally announced it would open, then it sounds like Disney have managed to significantly reduce any delays due to these issues. The rest of GE at WDW actually opened about 3 months early so these issues clearly didn't affect the rest of GE.

I do know that the California version has hit issues - hence the delay to it's opening date - but the Florida one has benefited from this and is not noticeably delayed.

BTW, RotR not being open doesn't explain why the other WDW parks - and the Universal parks - are quieter than normal.
