Florida Keys Stopovers?

Happy new year dibbers

Starting to pull together our plan for August (fingers crossed) and prior to boarding our cruise in Miami, we have 6 days to explore the Floriday keys. For those who are more familiar with the keys, would you say we have suitably spaced out our days across the locations? Should we spend an extra day in Key West and drop a day elsewhere? Thanks for any tips!

2 nts Key Largo
1 nt Marathon
2 nts Key West
1 nt Islamoroda

Any tips on things to do would be gratefully received, we plan to snorkel at John Pennekamp park, visit the Turtle Hospital and Sombrero beach, and feed the tarpon at Robbies in Islamorada.

Thank you!

That sounds like a great itenerary! At Robbies, I'd highly recommend renting a kayak. We boated over to Indian Key and had a great afternoon there. In Key West, we loved the trolley tram tour, and the Butterfly Conservatory! We also did snorkeling at John Pennekamp - it was a bit windy so the water was a little cloudier than we would have liked, but still had a great time. We also spent a full day at Bahia Honda State Beach (the one with the broken railway bridge), which was SO nice and relaxing - the water was crystal clear and it was so lovely. Would def recommend that if you'd like a relaxing day somewhere too!

We stayed a night at Pelican Cottages in Key Largo a couple of years ago. It was a lovely cottage by the water but we sat out having a drink in the evening and got absolutely battered with insect bites.

Make sure you have decent protection.

Sounds ideal. We loved Hemmingway's House in Key West, especially if you love cats with 6 toes! Also the West Martello Tower Gardens and the Key West Wildlife Rescue nearby. Link in signature to trip report. Have done Keys 3 times and love them.

Thanks all, have spent some time researching and tweaking, and have now booked (with free cancellation) the following:

1nt Atlantic Bay Hotel, Tavernier (for visiting John Pennekamp & Key Largo)

3nts Amsterdam's Curry Mansion Inn, Key West (Duval St, Mallory Sq, Fort Zach Park, Trolley tour, Aquarium)

2nts Hampton Inn, Marathon (Turtle hospital, Pigeon key boat, Looe Key snorkeling)

3nts El Paseo hotel, Miami South Beach

Its become clear how much there is to do in the keys, it looks beautiful and if we are forced to change our plans due to covid, we will definitely move it to next year rather than fully cancel.

Thanks for your tips!

Our favourite day was visiting Theatre of the Sea. If you are into wildlife, dolphins, seals , exotic birds you are going to love it. It’s very reasonably priced too.
Turtle Hospital was also lovely.
