The hop on hop off bus tour is great and there are also guided walks - some with a Roman Centurion. A walk around the city walls is a great way to see lots of the history and there are a couple of museums. You can take an organised trip on the river or hire a rowing or motorboat yourself. Chester Park has some live theatre performances over the summer and I believe the cathedral gardens are hosting open air cinema.
We’re just over the border in Wales but visit both Chester and Manchester regularly, love them both
We’re also just over the border in Wales

The Abode in Chester is really nice. It has some fantastic rooms at the front of the hotel.

Chester , 100% some lovely boutique hotels good bars and restaurants, also easy to use as a base to visit cheshire, liverpool and north wales

The races are also very much worth a visit, but this might impact on availability on accommodation, but well worth doing and not dear

Will you have a car?

Personally I’d go for Chester, I’ve stayed at the Crowne plaza which was very central and it was a good hotel.
I’ve also stayed at the Grosvenor Pulford and that was a really nice stay, but it was outside the centre so not ideal if you want to walk for drinks at night.

We live about twenty miles from Chester and we go quite often as we have an annual pass for Chester Zoo (which is amazing).

Chester - Manchester Is like any other big city with great shops but Chester is very like York but not quite as big. We are from Liverpool and are actually having a break in Chester this year. It is nice.
