Missing or sitting gcse whilst ill
Can anyone tell me what happens in that scenario? Am presently sat in hospital with youngest who has severe rib pain , hurts to breathe and even sit down . School has said if I can get him there by 11 he can sit his exam late but at moment not sure his answering will be up too much ! He has another one later too - what a mess !

The school will apply for special consideration so his marks will be adjusted to reflect his current situation (they'll probably want documentation from your doctor or the hospital) so if he can struggle in it'd probably be better , so long as the doctor is OK with it.

My daughter had food poisoning- funnily enough during English, today’s exam! She had to keep getting sick & leaving & they added all her ‘sick’ time to the end! They did say they could use her mock marks If she missed totally, she couldn’t resist until November!

Isn’t there a contingency day for the first time this year? Wonder if it applies to sickness? Speak to school

Hope he is ok. Exams and illness are stressful enough in themselves but the two combined is dreadful. I am sure the school can apply for special consideration . Good luck to him x

I think this only applies if the whole country need to have the day changed not just for 1 pupil as others will have done the exam.
OP I hope he makes it to his exams but if not I think they'll apply for special consideration and maybe use his predicted grades. You'll probably need a doctors note.

There has always been a contingency period for every year. This may be the first year the published it as a day rather than a period. My understanding is that this is for major disruptions where enough people couldn't sit the exam they would cancel it nationally and re-schedule it for this date (26th June).
You couldn't have individuals sitting exams which have already taken place on that day as you could not guarantee that they would not have had access to any means of knowing what the questions were. The AQA website has some information on the topic at aqa.uk/exams-adminis...-consideration What a horrible situation and one that has been at the back of my mind as DD does her GCSE's. Hope things work out OK for your DS Edited at 09:43 AM. |

My daughter had a tonic clonic seizure on the morning of her (PM) GCSE Geography exam. I got her there for the afternoon and she sat it, but it was a mistake - she was clearly still in a ‘post ictal’ state and when she got home, fell asleep and woke up later in the evening, had no memory of the exam, or what she’d written.
We contacted her consultant who thought we shouldn’t had submitted to the pressure from school and taken her in either. He wrote a letter to the exam board, and she was eventually awarded her mock mark, which was an A. Stressful times - I sympathise.

Thanks all , hospital diagnosed pluerisy , we got a note and rushed back to school as they said he could do it if he got there by 11 . However school said he is clearly not fit to sit any exams today and sent us home .

Slightly different but DW was diagnosed with cancer in 2014 the day before our eldest daughter sat her first A level. We spoke to the school to explain that she would be upset and tearful and they said it was possible to defer the exams for 6 months. She decided to "go for it" and did well, getting the predicted grades. I guess differing county education departments have differing opinions, dependant on circumstances.
