iPhone question - texts from Android

I'm hoping someone might be able to help with an iPhone /android issue that we're having please.

My sons just bought a new iPhone and the rest of the family are on android still. For some reason, we're having trouble with the standard iPhone/android messages apps. He can send a text to me, but when I reply to him, the text goes to his old phone, despite the fact that he's removed the Sim card and it's in his new iPhone. I didn't even think that was possible!?

Has/does anyone else have trouble with iPhones receiving normal text messages from android phones please?

WhatsApp is working fine, but we like to have texts as another communication option.

Wipe the old phone or a least deactivate Imessage on it.

We've solved it! After getting everyone in the house to send him a text, the only one that he received was from our daughter. Her Samsung has a different basic messeges app to mine, my husbands and and her boyfriend's phones - we all have the same app. So, I downloaded a different messages app from the Playstore and it worked! No idea why there's a problem with the pre installed app, but at least we've found an easy solution

There was no imessage on it as it was an android phone. Problem solved now, but thank you for replying
