I hope she is starting to feel better. Big (socially distanced) hugs to both of you

Are all our second year students staying at uni through the lockdown? I know guidance says that they should, but understandably mental health issues mean some students would find this very difficult and I imagine many first year’s students have taken the decision to return home (I know Georgia would have last year)
Georgia is staying, she has a lab session every week which she is finding vitally important to her course. She is also far more settled this year and happy with her house share so homesickness isn’t an issue. She was planning to come home and see us for a break soon as we have been in local and fire break lockdown since she went in September so haven’t seen her at all since then. We are both very sad that this isn’t going to be possible, neither has it been possible for us to pop over to see her before lockdown in England as we are still not allowed to from Wales. I must admit we were tempted to, but we’ve done our best to stick to the rules so far and as Georgia is coping well we felt we would continue to follow the rules (if she had been struggling, then the decision would have been a different one). I’m missing her though as we’ve never been apart this long and are so very close, we chat every day though and message and video call so I’m very grateful for technology through all of this. |

Hello, horrible isn’t it when we miss them so much and can’t see them!
Joshua is staying down in Portsmouth with most of hisflat mates, 2 of them have gone home though for lockdown He didn’t want to come home but I did ask him He has loads of uni work to do next week as it’s reading week so he is going to crack on with that so that will keep him busy to start with He has just shaved his hair off again as he said he won’t be going out for a month, I did say that he better wear a hat if he goes out for a daily walk/exercise or he might scare the neighbours haha Presuming all is well he is coming home on 9th December for Christmas, a little earlier than planned but it is his sisters 18th birthday on the 11th so wanted to be home for that |

I think I knew that Georgia would decide to stay too, which is good news really as it shows how settled she is (and the same with your Joshua). She is disappointed that she can’t be here for a short period over her reading week next week but, like Joshua, she has said it’s going to give her extra time to get up to date with all her work and a report she has to write.
It’s rather cold to shave hair off, I do hope it’s warmer down in Portsmouth for Joshua than it was here this morning. The 9 December will soon be here though so you can have home for the birthday and Christmas celebrations. I think we are all hoping for our small family get togethers at Xmas this year. I’m sure we will be limited with how many we can see, but it will be nice to just have some sort of family get together. |

DD is a first year uni student and is staying at uni at the moment. I think most (but certainly not all) other first year students she knows are.
Although most of her lectures are online, there are a few that are in person, plus there's lab work and other face-to-face sessions. However, the lecturer who does the lab work has just tested positive so they can't do that for 2 weeks. Same goes for a couple of the staff in the small animal dept (DD is doing BioVet Science) so doing some of that practical work probably won't happen for the next couple of weeks either. Unfortunately DD gets very stressed and anxious, so all this worry about the virus and lockdown doesn't help the existing worry about being away from home.

I feel for all the students through this, and recognise how very difficult it must be for them, especially for their first year. Has your daughter made friends within her flat? My niece is also a first year and gets on well with her flatmates so is also not too worried about staying. I think it helps if they get in with their flatmates as lockdown would be difficult living with people they have nothing in common with
Science students do need the face to face lab sessions, so I’m sorry your DD won’t be able to attend hers for the next two weeks. I know this was the main reason my DD decided to stay as the lab sessions definitely help with her course. Good luck to your DD, I think all students are having to face far too much stress and extra worries due to the pandemic. It’s not easy for any of them, but it’s particularly difficult when they are away from home for the first time |

Yes, thankfully. I mean, she's not BFF with them or anything like that but they do seem to be a friendly bunch and she does get on with them. I think if she wasn't friends with them, she would've returned home a few weeks ago, lockdown or not.
DD was gutted that she couldn't do the small animals stuff this week. She was due to look after and learn all about the guinea pigs this week.

It’s a big help that she gets along with them. My DD wouldn’t have stayed last year as she didn’t get along with her flatmates very much, they were bearable but she spent her time with friends she had made on her course so lockdown would have been unbearable. This year she’s chosen her own housemates of course and they get on really well
It’s so sad that your DD missed out on the guinea pigs. Last year my DD missed out on quite a lot of field trips as they were all scheduled for the last term and of course, term ended early. This year she was planning to go on the field trip to Costa Rica but, sadly, all overseas field trips are cancelled. It is so sad to think they aren’t able to get the full course. |
